Emily Carr
April 2016
Message from Administration
As we quickly approach the end of the year, we have begun planning for September 2016. At this time, Emily Carr is down two classes from our current year. This may change over the next four months with additional registrations. We will continue to share more information for September as we know more.
Parent input for class placements has been collected and this step in the class building process is now completed. Please do not send any additional requests as we will be unable to consider them. Teachers are in the midst of collecting further information from support staff and students. There are many drafts created over the next while as teachers work diligently to create balanced classes for the upcoming school year. As you can imagine, not all requests can be met due to a variety of factors that impact classroom dynamics; however, we always strive to accommodate requests when possible.
Thank you:
Last September, we did a Terry Fox Walk/Run and your support over the past 8 years has raised a grand total of $16,339.49 to the Terry Fox Foundation. This is remarkable and speaks to how generous our Emily Carr community is with their time and money. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the helpers that support us day-to-day, including (but not limited to), the "Carr"nival committee, Grade 7 parents working on Graduation, members of School Council, and all of our milk, pizza and Quizno's helpers.
6th Annual World Tour Multicultural Evening
Please be sure to join us for World Tour Night on Wednesday, May 11 from 6:30pm -8:00pm. This is an evening for all the family to enjoy other cultures, see country displays, hear music and see dances or just enjoy meeting other families. There will be activities and fun for everyone! We have many student dance performances, a Korean Nanta drumming group and a performance from our Gold Winning Grade 8 Band scheduled, so don't miss it!
There will be many countries represented, but if you would like to host a table there is still time to join in on the fun. Please email Mrs. Hassall at hassalll@hdsb.ca if you are interested in helping.
Kindergarten Orientation:
We would like to welcome all parents of new students entering Junior Kindergarten in September 2016 to a parent information meeting on May 25th at 6:00 pm in the school gym. This meeting will include information about a "typical kindergarten day" and important information about Emily Carr.

Tell Them From Me
In our continuing effort to increase school effectiveness, the Halton District School Board is once again asking for your input in the “Tell Them From Me” (TTFM) Partners in Learning Parent Survey. The Partners in Learning Parent Survey allows parents to provide feedback in an anonymous way. The username and password below are unique to Emily Carr Public School and will be required to access the questionnaire.
Successful schools foster greater communication with parents, encourage parental involvement in their child’s schoolwork, and engage parents in school activities and governance. The Partners in Learning Parent Survey is a comprehensive questionnaire covering your views on your child’s experiences at school and at home. The survey also provides feedback to schools about the extent to which parents feel Emily Carr Public School supports learning, positive behaviour, and promotes a safe and inclusive environment.
The questionnaire can be accessed at www.tellthemfromme.com. This is a secure site operated by The Learning Bar Inc., a reputable survey partner. Once you access the secure website above, you will see a box requesting your username and password. The username and password for parents/guardians of students at Emily Carr Public School is:
Username: emil800
Password: parent8a
Please note: Responses are accepted until May 13, 2016. The questionnaire will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete. You will need to complete the survey in one continuous session. Open-ended comments at the end of the survey need to be submitted within 15 minutes of the start of that item response.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Frank Nezavdal, Department of Research and Accountability, 905-335-3663 ext. 3381 or by e-mail: nezavdalf@hdsb.ca.
If you have any technical issues with the survey please contact the Information Centre at 905-333-4372 (HDSB) or 1-888-432-4372 (HDSB), Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or by e-mail: informationcentre@hdsb.ca

Emily Carr’s Annual Garden Clean Up
What a great day for our annual Emily Carr Garden Cleanup on Saturday, April 23rd! The sun was shining as our community came together to clean and spruce up our school grounds and gardens. Together we picked up garbage, pulled weeds, hauled and spread mulch (and of course collected snails) as we enjoyed a morning together in support of Earth Day and Emily Carr.
A giant thank you to the wonderful Emily Carr families, teachers and administrators, and the very thoughtful Garth Webb students, who joined us in making an impact on our environment!
Thank you to RBC for their continued support of this annual event!
Drama Production
Emily Carr presented “It Happened in Our Hometown” to a full house on Wed. April 20th. The cast and crew did an amazing job, putting on a very memorable production that focused on the environment. We would like to congratulate all those involved in this production. From creating sets, moving props, to learning lots of lines, the hard work and pride demonstrated by everyone was greatly appreciated. A big thank you also goes to out to Mrs. Jen Howse for her creativity and direction. We are certainly very lucky to have her write and produce another great play for Emily Carr.
Mental Health Week:
Emily Carr is thrilled to participate in Halton District School Board’s Mental Health Week. Our Wellness week will run from Monday May 2 - Friday May 6. There are quite a few fun and engaging activities planned for the students and staff. The week will kick off with the spirit day theme “Your Dream Career” on Monday, where students are encouraged to dress up like their dream career. Throughout the week, students and staff will have an opportunity to participate in a guided stretching (yoga) session, a bucket drumming session, a zumba session, and more. We will also offer some Guided Mindfulness sessions to students. On Wednesday, students are encouraged to dress up as any colour of the rainbow for our “True Colours” day. This day will encourage diversity in our Emily Carr Community and will promote a safe and inviting school environment. The week will close with a “Tropical Vacation Day” where students are encouraged to dress up as if they are going on a tropical holiday (school appropriate attire please). Thank you to all the staff, students and members of our community who have helped to organize this week and run events.

A Musical Note by J. Barber
The Grade 8 Band is off to Ottawa on May 12 -13th to compete in the National Music Festival. They are very excited to be able to compete at this level. The students will also be performing on May 11th at Emily Carr's World Tour Evening and then June 1st at Canada’s Wonderland Music Festival. After the World Tour performance, there will be a short meeting for the parents of the grade 8 band, just to touch base before leaving the next day for Ottawa. The Grade 8 Band will finish their year with a performance on June 8th, for their families at which time they will play our new commissioned piece. On April 27th the students had an opportunity to work with the composer, Vince Gassi. Truly a busy term! The Grade 7 Band started rehearsing at the end of February. They are a very eager group who are preparing a concert for their families on May 18th. They meet Tuesday after school. The Interlink Choir concluded their year with a fine performance at our school play on Wednesday, April 20th. The Blue Jays' Choir is preparing for their outing to the Blue Jays' game on Thursday, June 9th. We have almost 600 people attending with approximately 120 families from our school attending. This should be a great evening for Emily Carr.
