Raider Record
September 19, 2019
Hello BHS Families and affiliates. We have finished with the majority of our second annual computer distribution to our students and learned a great deal about the process. We thank you for being gracious with us if you encountered an extra hassle or two as a result of our learning curve with the management of close to 1,000 computers and their components. Please review a few details below to make sure our computers and their components stay in good working order for the next several years.
There are 4 components that have been checked out to students:
Laptop
AC Adapter
Sleeve
Stylus
Laptop ($650-800)
Students will receive the same laptop they were assigned the previous year. This rewards students for caring for their device as the laptops will be in service for 4 years with the same student, following them from their Freshman through their Senior year.
Students are expected to keep their laptops sticker free.
AC Adapter ($30)
AC Adapters are unmarked. That means that there is no way to tell one AC Adapter from another. For this reason, we suggest students keep them at home and try to charge over night.
If they bring the charger to school they should be very careful not to lose it or leave it lying around.
If a student loses their charger, the library can provide a new one. A $30 fine will be placed on their account until they pay or meet with their assigned Assistant Principal to explain the scenario.
Sleeve ($15.75)
Part of the "Responsible Use Policy" that students and guardians have signed prior to checking out a computer requires the student to transport their computer in the sleeve.
We found that students who transport their computers without the sleeve may suffer damage to the corners of the computer, rendering it non functional, resulting in the need for a costly replacement computer.
If a student loses their sleeve, please get a replacement from the library.
Stylus ($28.50)
Although a mangled or missing Stylus can result in a fine, other parts of the stylus can be maintained. The library does its best to keep batteries, tips, lanyards, and the little holster loop in stock. Students are encouraged to come by during the first two periods of every day when HELP desk students are staffed. They can also come by outside of class time for these items.
Styluses were not maintained over the summer break, they were returned "as-is" with the computer to the student. If your student reports that the stylus isn't working, they can bring it to the library and we will see what we can do. If it is undamaged and well taken care of, we can fix most problems on the spot.
It is my goal to elevate the voice of the technology users to our district team who provides the technology. So, if you have any success or problems, concerns or compliments, please send them my way in an email.
Although each computer component has a dollar amount associated with it, it is not the district's goal to charge students or families for using the technology. If you have followed the Responsible Use Policy, have done your best to take care of the technology, and you still run into problems, please work with us to resolve it.
Thank you,
Joe Balsiger

It’s all elemental; celebrating 150 years with the periodic table
The year 2019 has been designated as the International Year of the Periodic Table by the United Nations General Assembly (UN) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO.) The UN-inspired celebration marks the 150th anniversary of the periodic table of chemical elements originally proposed/discovered by Dmitry Mendeleev in 1869. The periodic table is considered one of the most important achievements in science, informing not only chemistry but biology, earth sciences, physics and medicine.
To celebrate locally, science faculty at Western Washington University (WWU) and Whatcom Community College (WCC) invite middle and high school students, families and teachers to join them at a community event from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Spark Museum, 1312 Bay Street, in downtown Bellingham. Admission is free.
The Oct. 12 event will include an elements-themed Wizards of Western show, as well as an historical portrayal of scientist Dmitri Mendeleev and his international colleagues, both presented by WWU faculty and students. Informational posters and booths will also be on display, including some of the latest areas of discovery of new chemical elements worldwide. Bring your questions!
To coincide with the UN designation, Governor Jay Inslee has also declared 2019 the Year of the Periodic Table in the state of Washington.
See you at the Spark Museum on Oct. 12!
