Celebrating the fun of "Pi" on 3.14

In honor of Pi (the mathematical representation of 3.14), our school is hosting a family math games night on National Pi Day, March 14th, 6-7:30pm in the Falcon Cafe. Families will have the opportunity to play a variety of math-based games and socialize with other QH families and staff. Visit game stations that use technology, logic puzzles, card and dice games, too! Note that students must be accompanied by an adult to attend. Feel free to drop in if you can't stay for the entire event.

The symbol (Greek letter “π”) was first used in 1706 by William Jones. A ‘p’ was chosen for ‘perimeter’ of circles, and the use of π became popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. Students and scholars of mathematics and science have long found fun in the infinite calculations involving Pi, and thus National Pi Day was born ...coincidentally also Albert Einstein's birthday! To learn more about National "Pi" Day and the significance to the world of mathematics, click here http://www.piday.org.

Volunteers needed to help set up before the event, and stay after to clean up. Click this link if you can help http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b44afa92ba75-pidaycelebrationm.

Concessions won't be available at Math Night so swing by the McDonald's at Quail Corners for dinner before or after-- read more in the next article!

QHMS Students in CMS Honors Orchestra

We had eight QHMS students perform in the CMS Honors Orchestra on Saturday, Feb 11th: Cannon Honbarrier, Eun Hong, Audrey Evans, Jordan Meyer, Amor Nunez, Melanie Moo, Lillian O’Donnell, and Daniel Wilk. Given the size of our school, we had significant representation. In addition, our very own Eun Hong was Concert Master for the Repertory Orchestra. "I was SOOO impressed to watch him lead the entire orchestra in tuning their instruments and be featured with multiple solos. They did SUCH a good job! I seriously couldn’t believe I was listening to middle schools students play!" said Principal Neill.

ATHLETICS & WELLNESS

LEND A HAND, SUPPORT QHMS

Why Haven't You Linked your VIC to QHMS?

QHMS benefits annually from Harris Teeter's "Together In Education" program. A portion of your purchases of HT brands and prescriptions filled at HT pharmacies are donated to our school. But the program requires that Harris Teeter shoppers link their VIC card to our school to earn our share! We are well below our usual number of linked customers, so PLEASE get linked today! Ask the cashier to LINK your VIC to QHMS...you can link up to five schools, but you must re-link annually. Check your receipt and confirm you are LINKED. And ask your friends and relatives to get linked, too. Our school has earned up to $1,000 from this program in previous year - help us grab that "free money" and GET LINKED next time you are at Harris Teeter.

One on one mentors are needed at QH once a week, Mondays or Wednesdays, 9:15 - 10:00am or 3:30-4:15pm time slots. Interested volunteers may contact Kris Wawer.

The theme for this year is "STEM + Entrepreneurship." The event provides an international forum for the presentation, discussion, and sharing of best practices in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and entrepreneurship in schools and other academic settings, including:

  • Fostering a better understanding of how STEM and entrepreneurship engage students, teachers, and administrators in a conversation about learning.
