Central Avenue Elementary

Tonya Middling - Principal

Kristin Hillius - Assistant Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Now that school has been going for a month, we are looking at the routine elements of the school year, but in a new way. A regular element of the school year is celebration of student success! In years past we have held CARE Assemblies, but this year we are changing our celebrations by mailing home certificates and continuing Pizza with the Principal for students recognized for the Wildcat Award for excelling or going above and beyond. We recognize that students can be successful academically AND with traits that show them to be "all-around" students, including friendship and determination. Students will also continue to be recognized with Central Avenue CARE Tickets, Principal 200 Club, and positive phone calls home.

Another regular school element is attendance. Beginning today, we are required to monitor a student's attendance and then contact families when students are absent. We did not do our daily attendance calls in September, as we know there were many adjustment issues around getting started. Now, as in the past, students will be excused for illness, appointments, and other documented reasons, such as court or family emergencies. Students will be marked absent if they do not attend their teacher's virtual class session or engage in the provided work. Absences will need to be excused with a parent note or call with an excusable reason. The most important piece is that we really want your students to be engaging with their teacher and work each day, especially since the instruction time has been shortened.

I hope you had a great "long" weekend. Enjoy the beauty of the season this week!

~Mrs. Middling

Hybrid Learning Update

2020-2021 Learning Model Overview

Hybrid Learning Option

  • In-person learning: Assigned students participate in in-person learning at the school site a minimum of two days/week.
  • Teacher-led online learning: Assigned students participate in teacher-led online learning during a set time.
  • Teacher-directed independent learning: Assigned students participate in pre-established learning activities on their own time.

Full-Remote Learning Option

Like the current remote learning plan, students will participate in a combination of teacher led (online instruction during a set time) and teacher directed (learning activities to be completed by students on their own time).

***Intended Hybrid Transition Timeline***

  • Early Learning (2 days/week): October 19 (if advised by public health authorities)
  • K-1 (4 days/week): October 19 (if advised by public health authorities)
  • 2-3 (Grade 2: 4 days/week; Grade 3: 2 days/week): Two weeks after the start of EL and K-1
  • 4-5 (2 days/week): Two weeks after the start of 2-3

*All timelines are tentative and will be implemented in consultation with local health authorities.

Asynchronous Schedule Change

Beginning the week of the week that K-1 students return to their buildings (current intended date: October 19), the asynchronous learning day will move from Wednesday to Monday for all students. This decision was made to allow families to prepare for asynchronous learning days over the weekend and to concentrate the amount of in-person learning each week. This schedule coincides with several local school districts. This schedule shift will occur for all students at the same time so that families with students in multiple schools and grade levels do not have to navigate competing schedules.

Food Resources

Franklin Pierce Schools will offer free lunch to all children and youth ages 0-18*, Monday-Friday. Children do not have to be present to receive a meal. Federal regulations usually require student recipients to be present, but exceptions will be made given our current public health crisis.

  • 35 locations! (click to view a list of the locations)
  • Monday-Friday from 11am-12pm
  • Grab n' go lunch and breakfast
  • All children and youth ages 0-18*
