Centennial Elementary
April 2018
Letter from the Principal
April 5, 2018
Dear Parents,
This time of year many parents begin to look forward to their child’s advancement to the next grade or the beginning of a school career. Please realize that staffing changes along with a variety of other factors come into play when assigning children to a class. Therefore, we will not be able to honor requests for particular teachers.
Each year the teachers, the counselor, assistant principal, and I spend an enormous amount of time placing our students in the most appropriate classroom for the upcoming year. Each child is “hand placed” after careful consideration by this team. Classes must be balanced as to academic needs, gender, behavioral accommodations, learning styles, and special needs. We also consider teaching and learning styles. We appreciate that you are comfortable with our decisions and trust that we have the best interest of all children at heart when making placements.
If for some reason you feel your child has some specific needs to be considered, we certainly welcome your input. You may share information with us that may help us select a particular type of teacher. We welcome your insight into the personality/needs of your child. Please note that I must receive a written request with information about your child and/or type of teacher. Due to time constraints, I am unable to schedule individual parent appointments regarding class placement. The written request must include the child’s name, present grade, request, and reason. Requests for a specific teacher will not be honored.
Any requests and information must be turned in no later than Thursday, April 19, 2018. Please know that this is not something that everyone will need to do. Letters/emails received after that deadline will NOT be considered.
I also ask that you do not make specific requests to the current teacher or other staff members. Those individuals can’t make those final decisions.
Please send your written letter directly to sara.stewart@pisd.edu or to the front office in a sealed envelope.
Sincerely,
Sara Stewart
Principal
Welcome Our New Secretary
Please help us welcome our new secretary, Mrs. Melody Michael. Melody may be a familiar face to many Centennial families, as she has previously served our community as a long-term substitute for various grade levels. Along with her substituting roles on several campuses she has also served Daffron, Robinson, Shepton, Jasper and Plano West in a variety of PTA and booster chair roles. Melody brings with her a wide variety of experiences from her time in the classroom and her roles as PISD parent and volunteer.
Send change of student dismissal and any other important correspondence to melody.michael@pisd.edu

STAAR Testing
Students at Centennial will be taking the STAAR test the week of April 9th and the week of May 14th. Since this is a secure test, it is imperative that only trained test administrators are in the building on these days. In order to maintain the integrity of the testing environment and ensure that it is uninterrupted for our students, we will not be able to allow any parents or volunteers in the building on any STAAR testing weeks.
For 3rd, 4th and 5th grade parents: Please see your grade level newsletter for more information. Keep in mind, we ask that you schedule all doctor, dental, lunch, etc. appointments accordingly. It is also very important that your child arrives at school on time as testing will begin first thing in the morning if he or she is involved in testing. We thank you in advance for your support!

Helpful reminders...
- If your child wakes up ill and/or with a fever, please keep him/her home and remember to call our Child Safe Line at 469-752-0700, option 3, to leave a message letting us know. Please speak clearly with your student's name, grade level and why they will be missing school. As this is voicemail, you may call at any time of the day (or night). This is also important if you are going out of town, or if your student will be tardy because of doctor or dentist appointments. When your student returns, please send a signed note by parent/guardian or a doctor's note stating why they were absent within 3 days of return.
- Lunches and other items forgotten at home can be left on the grade level shelf in the front foyer. Each grade level will check the shelf prior to lunch to deliver the item to your child. This should be used for the occasionally forgotten item, not everyday.
- If a last minute change of dismissal plans occur, please contact the front office prior to 2:00 PM at 469-752-0700. We cannot guarantee that your child will get the message if the phone call is received after 2:00.
- Early pickups must be before 2:15 PM.
Dismissal/Arrival
Please do NOT allow your child to exit or enter your car from the middle lanes on Ventura. We have worked diligently to make the carpool lane safe and efficient, please use the carpool lane, park in the south parking lot or park on Ventura (where legal) during arrival and dismissal.
If you choose to park your car on Ventura and walk to pick up your child we ask that you please obey all street signs and model safety first by using the crosswalk.
Your child's safety is our number #1 priority, thank you in advance for your cooperation.
