Elevating Excellence in Academics, Character & Community
Edition 20 - Week of 2/10/2020
Leadership Corner
Students have been working hard this week. At the K-3 Campus, students took a moment to write Valentines to a 104 year old Veteran. What a great way to show kindness. The 2nd graders braved the Oregon Trail. Students role played the challenges on the trail, made homemade butter, made corn husk dolls, and played the Oregon Trail game. It was a fun morning of memories. 3rd grades were celebrated for their awesome accomplishments for making honor roll.
Next week we celebrate the 100th day of school. 100 days of learning, growing, showing kindness, challenging themselves, and doing all the hard things.
4th grade Battle of the Book battlers have been working diligently studying the books, practicing at lunch time, and representing New Vision in the district battles. This week the 4th graders had two battles, against Sarah Milner and Carrie Martin and they came away with top scores. They have one more battle next week against Centennial. The Grand Battles will be February 22nd at the Loveland Public Library. A big shout out to Ava, Declan, Naomi, Matt, Lauren, and Parker for all their hard work and a special thanks to coach McElroy for all her leadership and support!
5th grade Battle of the Book battlers have also been working diligently studying the books, practicing during the week, and representing New Vision at the district battles. This week they have a double battle against BF Kitchen and Centennial. Their final battle next will be with Sarah Milner. Grand Battles will be February 22nd at the Loveland Public Library. Best of luck to the 5th graders and a big shout out to Treven, Celeste, Grady, Albert, Kelan, Kaylee, and Oliver for their hard work. A special thank you to coach Larkins, Nicole Porter, and Roni Froelich for all their time and support they give to the team.
Staff Shout-Outs

Officer Dee Jalali
Is your child interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement?
During my time as an SRO, I have had a handful of students approach me and tell me they want to be a police officer when they get older. Lately, I’ve seen a rise in interested students and although I tell them about these programs I’m about to share, I wanted to let our parents know as well. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any additional questions that come up!
Ride along program
The Loveland Police Department allows citizens to ride along with uniformed officers for part of our shifts. This allows riders to see what our jobs are like first hand. A rider must be 14 or older but ride alongs are open to anyone who is interested. A waiver will have to be signed by whoever is riding and if someone is under 18, their parent or guardian as well. If you or your children are interested in a ride along with the Loveland Police Department, you can bring the form to the police department or email it to our records department. Forms can be picked up from the Loveland Police Department or found at http://www.cityofloveland.org/departments/police/records/schedule-a-ridealong
Explorer program
Our explorer program is a law enforcement career oriented program that allows young adults to become acquainted with law enforcement activities. The explorers are given the chance to participate in community programs and special events alongside police officers and assist with things like directing traffic, gate security, parking, and lots more. Explorers are also allotted ride alongs with officers to learn their jobs better. There is an explorer academy held once a year that teaches the explorers about equipment, skills, and other police related topics. Our explorers also participate in a national conference annually based off their law enforcement skills. Over the years, many of our explorers have been hired as police officers so this program is a great foot in the door for anyone interested in becoming an officer one day.
Interested applicants must:
Be between the ages of 14-20
Be enrolled in a high school, have graduated, or complete a G.E.D program
Maintain a 2.5 GPA average in school
Complete an application, pass an oral board, and pass a background check
Applications can be found at: http://www.cityofloveland.org/departments/police/community-programs/police-explorer-post
Citizens academy
This one is for you parents! Every fall, the Loveland Police Department hosts a citizen’s academy. They are classes held over a course 6-10 weeks and cover topics such as K9, bomb squad, the community resource unit, SWAT, use of force, citizen/police interactions and more.
Interested parties must:
Be 18 or older
Live, work, or volunteer in the city of Loveland
Not have any felony convictions
No significant or misdemeanor convictions
Pass a background check
If you are interested, be sure to look for postings regarding our citizen’s academy on our website or facebook page.
-----
Additionally, I am looking for input from YOU! What topics do want to learn more about that are related to law enforcement? Somebody suggested I could start an anonymous question and answer section to be part of the weekly newsletter. Maybe via a private email or physical dropbox?
I would really appreciate it if you could take a few seconds and fill out this anonymous survey indicating whether or not you’d be interested in a “Dear Abby” type question/answer column with Officer Dee.

NVCS Board Elections
MEMO
To: New Vision Parents/Guardians
From: NVCS Board of Directors
Date: January 27, 2020
Subject: Open 2020-21 Board of Director Positions
New Vision Charter School is moving forward with great success and needs your help to keep up our progress. Students and staff are enjoying our new 4-8 building and our K-3 facility is already brimming with new students. NVCS is continuing to grow and we’ve received another recognition as a 2019 School of Distinction. We want to continue our success for years to come and we’re looking for parents to join our Board of Directors.
As a charter school, NVCS is governed by our parents and community. Each year the board opens 2 positions that are ending their terms. This is your opportunity to be part of the decision-making process for New Vision and its future. As a member of the Board of Directors, your life and business experience play an important role, and your opinion and contributions are highly valued. NVCS enjoys an increasingly diverse student population and we hope to have a board that reflects that same growing diversity. We invite you to consider running for a position on the Board.
There are two (2) positions opening up in May 2020. The process is relatively simple, apply for a position and participate in the election process in April. You may also want to attend the orientation session at the March 30th Board meeting at 5:30 pm to ask questions and learn more about what is involved in serving on the New Vision Board of Directors.

Work with TSD school board, the Boys & Girls Club and other agencies on matters that pertain to NVCS
Establish school policies that govern the manner in which we operate as an organization
Collaborate with our school Principal in establishing standards and best-in-class strategies for continued improvement as a top-tier charter school.
What is expected of a board member?
Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled, monthly Board meetings. (3-4 hours/month)
Prepare for the meetings beforehand by reviewing the agenda and Board packet. (1-2 hours/month)
Serve as liaison to one of our standing committees (School Accountability/SAC, Finance, Public Relations, Committee of 2 (2-3 hours/month)

Pets at School
This is a reminder that pets of any kind are not allowed on either campus. Thank you.
Random Acts of Kindness
Did you know kindness affects our brain positively? Kindness increases oxytocin which lowers blood pressure, and increases self-esteem and optimism, according to studies at Dartmouth University. They also found that helping others makes a person feel stronger, more energetic, and calmer.
The week of Feb 17th is Kindness Week, with Random Acts of Kindness observed on Monday February 17th. We will be talking with students about this during the week. We would love for you as parents and guardians to also discuss this special week with your child at home. What are some ways they can be kind to their classmates this week? What could they do for their community to promote kindness? How can they show kindness to the school staff and school property? I'm sure they'll realize they're already doing a lot of those things already! If you want to take it a step further and use a kindness calendar for your family at home, here is a great resource for you: https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/printables
