Annual Buffett Science Fair Looks to Be Outstanding Again
The Buffett Science and Engineering Fair is in its 14th year at Buffett. This event allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to think critically through inquiry based projects. Each project is judged according to a rigorous rubric by community members, district staff, and past students. Students practice the Buffett Extra Value Standard of communication. Each participant presents his/her fair board to the judges and orally explains the project answering questions from the judges. The top 10 projects at each grade level (6-8) receive a trophy. Many students then choose to go on to the Metro Area Science Fair in February.
This year the Buffett Science and Engineering Fair will be Friday, January 19, 2018. We will have 283 projects on display. Parents, please plan to visit the Science Fair during School Choice Night on Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Special Learning Opportunity with the Rose Blumkin Home
Mrs. Tunning’s Block 7/8 ELA class visited the Rose Blumkin Home on Novemeber 30th. The purpose of the visit was to interview some residents and introduce a shared book experience we will have with them. This Intergenerational Book club will be using the book "A Night Divided" by Jennifer Nielsen.
Mrs. Tunning has participated in this field trip with her students many times in the past. Students enjoy getting to make friends with residents from the Blumkin Home and gain a better understanding of a book when discussed from a perspective of someone older than themselves.
The Rose Blumkin residents will come to Buffett in February to discuss the book with the students. Buffett students will show their hospitality to their friends from the Blumkin Home and enjoy a shared reading experience.

Increased Access to Technology
The 1:1 learning environment has brought many advantages to all our students. This environment has allowed for equal, accurate, and timely access to information; for immediate, instant feedback; and for developing 21st century learning skills. These are the things we imagined as we prepared for this year:
- Imagine a classroom where a teacher is able to provide live descriptive feedback through the use of collaborative tools…
- Imagine a classroom where every student’s voice is heard through the use of an online content delivery system…
- Imagine a teacher that is able to provide digital resources to catch a student up from an absence…
- Imagine a classroom where a student’s curiosity can be honored with access to information at their fingertips…
- Imagine a classroom where students are able to learn from experts in the field without having to take a bus somewhere…
- Imagine a classroom where students are problem solving and creating knowledge through collaboration and communication that doesn’t end when class ends…
Through countless hours of professional training, dedication and planning, our teachers have brought what we imagined into real life opportunities for our students.
