Greetings Eagle Families,


It is hard to believe that in just a few short days we will be welcoming our students back for the first day of school. As summer draws to a close and another school year begins many find themselves feeling a wide range of emotions. I can’t begin to express how excited I am to welcome all of our students on Wednesday, August 17th. Our entire school staff has spent the last several days preparing for what I know will be an exciting, engaging, and excellent school year.


I want to thank all of our parents/guardians, students, and community members who joined us for our Open House and Back to School Night. Additionally, there are some important and key pieces of information in this month’s Community SOAR Report.


Please continue to closely monitor your email for Find Out First messages from OMS and FCPS as this will be our primary means of communication throughout the school year. Car Rider Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Patterns and Procedures

All car rider drop-off and pick-ups will occur in the side parking lot off of Oakdale School Road. OMS staff will be in the side parking lot to assist with traffic flow, student crossings, and vehicles safely exiting from the parking lot. Please pay close attention to their guidance. OMS staff will be highly visible over the next few weeks helping with the flow of traffic. During these first few weeks, I ask for your patience and understanding as everyone becomes familiar with our arrival and dismissal procedures.

  • Parents/Guardians who are dropping students off AFTER 8:12AM or picking students up BEFORE 3:00PM should use the main parking lot and the front entrance of the school.


OMS Arrival Traffic Procedure

  • All traffic should follow Oakdale School Road past the middle school and turn left into the OMS side parking lot.
  • Upon entering the parking lot, all car traffic should stay to the left and follow staff guidance as you proceed towards the student drop off location near the front of the parking lot (illustrated by a “stop” sign on the map).
  • Once you reach the drop-off spot, students should exit the car and follow the guidance of the OMS staff member(s) at that location.
  • After the students have safely crossed and are on the sidewalk, the car should follow staff guidance, yield to any exiting busses, and proceed to exit the parking lot onto Oakdale School Road. Cars SHOULD NOT make U-turns in the parking lot.


OMS Dismissal Traffic Procedure

  • All traffic should follow Oakdale School Road past the middle school and turn left into the OMS side parking lot.
  • Upon entering the parking lot, all car traffic should stay to the left to begin forming lanes of parked cars (OMS staff will be present to help with this process).
  • All bus riders and walkers will be dismissed first beginning at 3:12. Once all of the busses have cleared, we will stagger dismissal for our car riders (at roughly 3:25).
  • As student exit the building, OMS staff will help students cross to their cars and begin releasing one row of cars when it is safe.
  • Please do not move your car until a staff member has released the row you are parked in.

Important Information

Attendance - If your child is unable to attend school due to an illness or doctor's appointment, or any other reason, please email a note to our attendance secretary, Ms. Nancy Sanders at oms.attendance@fcps.org. Please include your child's first and last name, grade, date of absence, and reason for absence. If Ms. Sanders has any questions she will reach out for clarification.

  • If Ms. Sanders does not hear from you before 9:00AM on the day of the absence, you will receive a One Call Now Attendance Notification for your child.
  • If your child has an appointment, please send them to school with a note which can be turned in to the front office in the morning. Your child will be given a pass and will be ready to go at the desired dismissal time without having to disrupt the classroom.


Bell Schedule - You can access the 22-23 OMS Bell Schedule by clicking HERE. Included on the bottom of the bell schedule are a few important times for students and parents/guardians to be aware of. Please note that the dismissal times for bus riders and car riders are estimates and may be delayed the first several days until we are able to establish a routine.

  • All students should be in the building by 8:06 to ensure that they are in their first period class before the final bell rings at 8:12.


Bus Information - A quick and easy resource to check if your child's bus is delayed is to visit https://apps.fcps.org/transdelay/ This site is updated in real-time to reflect any bus delays.


Chromebook Distribution - OMS will distribute Chromebooks to students on August 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. Additional information and the user agreement will be shared with students and parent/guardians in the coming days. Each OMS student will be assigned a device which will be distributed on the following days:

  • August 22nd - 8th Grade
  • August 23rd - 7th Grade
  • August 24th - 6th Grade


Hallway Lockers - All OMS students will have access to a hallway locker should they choose to use one. Lockers are not mandatory as students may carry their backpacks or string bags with them to class (string bags are preferred as it saves space in classrooms). Students who choose to use a locker will need to have a lock and provide their Eagle Time teacher with the combination.


Student Cell Phone Use: In an effort to work together to ensure appropriate use of cell phones for students, we encourage parents/guardians to review safe cell phone usage frequently, maintain open communication, and utilize appropriate parental controls. You may also want to create a cell phone contract with your child outlining the privileges and responsibilities associated with cell phone use. For your convenience, a sample contract is provided here. Also, students are reminded of the school’s rules for having a cell phone at school, which is linked in case you wish to periodically review them with your child. Finally, please reiterate with your child to not use their cell phone for unsanctioned purposes such as: cheating, harassing or bullying others, taking photos or videos of others without permission, checking personal social media accounts, or sexting. Some violations may have consequences not only related to student discipline, but victims have also pursued legal action against both the student and the parent/guardian. Those outcomes are best avoided when schools and parents partner together. We thank you for all that you do to help us reinforce good digital citizenship.


Oakdale Middle School has implemented the "Off, Away, and Out of Sight" cell phone policy for the last several years. While students are in the school building during the instructional day, they are to keep their cell phones, "Off, Away, and Out of Sight".

  • Parents/Guardians - if you need to contact your child please call the front office at 240-236-5500 and we will get the message to your child as soon as possible.


Tutor Me - All Frederick County Public Schools middle and high school students have 24/7 access to virtual tutoring services for help on any subject. Students can receive assistance through audio/video chats or through a messaging system. Assistance/Support is available on virtually any subject matter. This includes getting feedback on written assignments and essays. Support is also available through Tutoring Me for students preparing for Advanced Placement exams.
