Parkside Monthly
December 2019
A Word from the Principal
Good morning, Parkside families!
Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break! I hope that you all had a relaxing, enjoyable break and ready for the next three weeks. These three weeks are crucial to students’ 2nd quarter grades—after we come back from Winter Break, only two weeks will remain in the quarter. It’s likely the majority of your child’s assignments and grades will occur in these weeks prior to Winter Break. Please be sure that you are checking your child’s grades on Illuminate and contacting the school if you have any questions or concerns.
A couple of things I’d like to acknowledge:
· We had a great turnout at Parent/Teacher Conferences prior to Thanksgiving. It was wonderful seeing parents and teachers collaborating together to best serve the students at Parkside!
· Many of our 7th Grade students are currently at Westminster Woods this week, participating in the Outdoor Education program. Many thanks to Ms. Quinn, Mr. Phan, and the parents and volunteers who helped make this happen.
Finally, I would like to take this moment to acknowledge two members of the Parkside Family who will not be returning after Winter Break: Ms. Katie Socienski and Ms. Sabrina Wilson. Ms. Socienski and her husband will be relocating to Oregon over the break, and Ms. Wilson will be relocating with her family to Texas. I speak for everyone at Parkside when I thank both for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to Parkside over the years. You will both be missed!
If I do not get the chance to do so in person, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, safe Winter Break. We’ll see you in January!

From our Counseling Department
Dear Parkside Families: We are finding ourselves in the midst of the holiday season, and as much as this time of year can be festive and joyful, for many, it can also be a stressful time. At Parkside, we have recently seen an increased awareness regarding students in need of immediate emotional support that concerns their well-being and safety. We encourage families and staff to pay close attention to our children’s needs. Keep in mind that student behaviors such as not completing work or misbehaving in class may be signs of greater underlying issues. Other indicating signs include: - Major changes in energy levels, eating, or sleeping habits - Frequent and intense feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anxiety, or fear - Uncharacteristic and unusual new interests, behaviors, or thoughts - Rapid and dramatic shifts in feelings and behavior - Often becoming very angry, aggressive, or worried - Isolates themselves and avoids social interactions - Harms themselves, such as cutting or burning her/his skin Parkside Intermediate School offers several services to address the emotional needs of students, including: Academic and Behavioral Counseling Mental Health Counseling A full-time psychologist Other additional services in the community include: Daly City Community Service Center 350 90th St Daly City, CA 94015 Phone: (650) 991-8007 Youth Service Bureau 1486 Huntington Ave # 100 South San Francisco, CA 94080 Phone: (650) 877-8642 StarVista 610 Elm Street, Suite 212 San Carlos, CA 94070 Phone: (650) 591-9623 Edgewood Center for Children and Families Headquarters: 957 Industrial Road, Suite B Drop-in: 931 San Bruno Ave. West, Suite #1 Crisis Hotlines Suicide Crisis Line: (650) 573-2662/1-800-SUICIDE/(650) 579-0350 Parenting Crisis Line: (888) 220-7575 We encourage you to reach out to the student support team at Parkside, should you feel that a child requires immediate emotional support.
