What is National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)?
According to the NJHS website, NJHS is "the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship."
How are members selected?
In most schools, students are only selected for NJHS membership at the end of their seventh grade year and get to enjoy membership as eighth grade students, but at AMS students have the opportunity to join even as sixth grade students. Mrs. Landreth, the NJHS faculty advisor, begins the screening process after the end of the first semester in January. Each AMS student's report card is hand-averaged to find students who meet the 92.5 grade point average requirement. Each student who meets this one criteria will be given the opportunity to apply for membership. The application process gives the students a chance to provide documentation about leadership, service, and citizenship. All students are also screened for any behavioral issues at school, which would reflect negatively on their character. Once the membership applications are collected, Mrs. Landreth hands them over to the five person faculty council, who ultimately determines which applicants meet the five criteria. Students who meet the criteria receive a letter from the chapter president offering them membership. Students whose applications did not exhibit the characteristics are given the opportunity to participate in an interview or to receive help in completing a new application. Students who are invited for membership are inducted in a special ceremony held in the school auditorium.
It is very important that the applications are completed by the students and not parents. Parents who want to help with the process, can help their students brainstorm the list of activities in which they have participated and help them revise the drafts of their application. Students who fill out their applications in a hurry often leave out critical information that the faculty council needs to make a determination.
What does membership include?
NJHS members are expected to maintain the characteristics that they displayed when selected, including the 92.5 grade average. They participate in all NJHS service events, including the annual Spaghetti Supper, and attend the Induction in the spring. Every member is a part of one of the committees (Spaghetti Supper, service, fellowship, hospitality, ceremony, academic) and attends these meetings when they are scheduled; they generally meet between 8-8:30 in Mrs. Landreth's room. Members must conduct at least five service hours per quarter and turn them in. There are on occasion all members meetings held from 8:30-9:05, but most of the work of NJHS happens through committees.
Event Information
NJHS Spaghetti Supper
All AMS families are invited to attend the annual NJHS Spaghetti Supper. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 for a family. Each meal includes pasta, sauce, salad, bread, and a beverage. Food is donated from local restaurants and served by our very own NJHS waitstaff. Additionally baked goods will be for sale. Half of the proceeds go to MANNA Foodbank and half stay with NJHS to sponsor their leadership programs. (One example is that it bought the supplies for the cookie decorating booth at Fall Fling!) To go boxes are available. Gluten free and vegan sauce will be available. It is a great way to feed your family before the Strings and Chorus concert. There just isn't a good reason not to attend! Tickets will go on sale in December.
