The battle of Okinawa had a code name, it was called the Operation iceberg. It was the largest amphibious war in the pacific war during world war II. The invasion was on April 1st 1945 on the island. The battle lasted up to 82 days until Japanese army surrendered.The soldiers that fought in that war would often call the battle "Typhoon of steel" Because of the ferocity of both sides and the intensity of the kamikaze attacks.
the united states lost more than 14,009 deaths or missing in action. The japan government admited after the war that they had lost more than 72,000 troops but not including the civilians that lived near the naval or air force bases.
