Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
It brings me so much joy to walk down the halls and see all the amazing work your students have created! I enjoy sharing what students are doing with you because it demonstrates how our students are learning about cultures, events, things and places while they paint, color, draw and write. Mrs Lunde's second grade class made masks as they learned about Dia de los Muertos last week. Day of the Dead is a holiday in Mexico to celebrate those who have passed away. You can see their masks and read more about Dia de los Muertos below. Mrs Lunde's class also learned and wrote about Frida Kahlo, who was inspired by nature and known for her portraits. Read about Frida's life and see their portraits of her below. Lastly I included some art from 3rd graders - their use of warm and cool colors impacted the feeling of each piece. Bravo to all the artists!
We spend a lot of time teaching reading, writing and math to your students, but know that our utmost priority is always their safety. Each month we are required to hold safety drills such as fire, earthquake, lockdown or lockout drills. On November 19 we'll be reviewing our lockdown procedures with your children. A lockdown means there is a possible threat inside the school which means hallways are cleared, classroom doors are locked and lights are turned off. Students and staff are instructed to stay quiet and out of sight during a lockdown.
Due to COVID protocols, we will be reviewing our procedures rather than practicing them. Our kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers will use this Lockdown Drill Story Book to explain the drill and guide discussions. Students in 4th and 5th grade will watch and discuss this video with their teachers. We follow the Standard Response Protocol. We thank you for your help and cooperation, as we work to provide safe learning environments for all students at Hallinan and in the Lake Oswego School District.
I am grateful for everyone who keeps our students safe.
with thanks,
Melissa Griffiths

Important PTO Information
PTO Meeting Next Wednesday
The next PTO meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday, November 17th in the school library. You can find the agenda here. We hope you'll join us! If there's enough interest, Principal Griffiths may offer another tour!
We STILL Need a Volunteer Coordinator!
We are still very much in need of someone to fill the Volunteer Coordinator position. No specific experience is required, just a willingness to help recruit and answer questions for our amazing volunteers! If you're interested, please reach out to Erin directly (hallinanpresident@gmail.com).
OBOB Registration Due 11/19!!
OBOB Registration Forms went home with all 3rd-5th graders last week and can also be found HERE. Links with more information, sample questions and a YouTube example of an OBOB "battle" are also listed on the back of the registration form. Return forms to the office, or email them to Hallinan OBOB Chairs - Gillian Flaccus-Irving or Lindsey Hargrove (emails below) by Friday 11/19. Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide program designed to promote a love of reading! Teams of four students compete to answer trivia questions drawn from 16 books in a quiz-show style format. If your child is looking for a team, please let us know by indicating it on the form and we'll help build teams. Students are welcome to listen to audiobooks if they prefer that format. We are looking forward to a great OBOB event!
Card Art Orders
Card Art proofs also went home with your child(ren) last week. If you're interested in placing an order, please visit the store section of Hallinan's Membership Toolkit to complete your order. Orders are due by November 19th. They make great thank you notes and gifts for the grandparents!

Vision Screening at Hallinan
Lake Oswego School District will be conducting the annual vision screening for Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students at Hallinan on Wednesday, December 1 at 8:45 am.
Vision screening will be done by the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. The OLSHF uses a Spot screener to do the vision screening. It looks like a large camera that takes a picture of your child’s eyes.
More information about Spot:
Some additional information:
- You have the right to decline vision screening for your child. Please let your child’s teacher know if you would like your child to OPT-OUT of vision screening.
- If your child is referred to a vision specialist, you will receive screening results within two weeks of the screening day.
- If for some reason the Spot screener could not take an adequate picture of your child’s eyes; a vision screening will be done using a distance eye chart.
- The vision screening is for Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students. If a parent of a 2nd or 4th grader has a specific vision concern for their student and would like them screened, they should notify the teacher.
