Ms. Beever's SUPER First Graders
What's Going on in Room 5?
Looking Back on Our First Two Weeks
In reading, we have been working hard on establishing routines for Daily 5 and small group time. We have read several stories about being a good friend and recognizing what makes us each unique and different. These stories include, The Night Before First Grade, Wemberly Worried, and Chrysanthemum. Ask your student how they are Bucket-Fillers in school!
We began our first math unit called Addition, Subtraction and the Number System. The students have had an opportunity to explore math tools and different math workshop activities that they will be working on throughout the unit. In Unit One, they will count, order, compare quantities, and develop new addition and subtraction strategies. I will begin sending home the math workshop activities in their red folders for you to practice at home during Math Game Nights!
We also started our new Social Studies Unit on Geography! This unit involves a lot of interactive technology-based activities that I hope to get the students working with in the computer lab.
This was a busy first two weeks! So many of my students have earned stickers for demonstrating good behavior, and have reached role model on our clip chart! I can't wait to give out more!
Homework Odds and Ends
Your child will be bringing home a new reading calendar each month. Please make sure this is returned to school each day so I can track their progress throughout the week.
Your child will also be bringing a red folder home every Monday for Math Game Nights throughout the week. Please keep this folder at home and return it every Friday so I can add any new materials! It is my hope that keeping this folder at home will encourage my students to explore these games throughout the week. The games in this folder build on important skills that are used in all of our math units. Please encourage them to play these games throughout the week!
