#EWExcellence ~ Week of 02.01.2016
La ola del lago Spanish Immersion & Edgewood School
Week of February 1, 2016
We are now officially in the second half of the 2015-16 school year. As I write this, I am reminded how quickly time goes by. Each day is a gift, filled with moments and opportunities to make major differences in the lives of our students and families. I would like to encourage each one of you, as you read this, to pause for 15 seconds to ask yourself this question:
"What is one concrete thing I will be intentional to do to make a difference in the lives of one of my students?"
Working in a school and with students affords us such amazing and meaningful opportunities to make a difference in the world. Have a difference- making day, a wonderful week, and magnificent month!
Change Management, Excellent Article, and Edgewood/LODL Vision & Mission Planning
Shaping our collective vision and mission of Edgewood School & La ola del lago Spanish Immersion. We need your input. Our Edgewood Leadership Team will be reviewing data and feedback in the survey below to begin the process of articulating an updated vision and mission at our next meeting, Monday, February 8.
Please read the following article, "The Physics of Change" and then answer the embedded Google Survey. Your responses are anonymous and appreciated!
Families felt incredibly welcomed and engaged at Peek into Preschool
This student couldn't be any happier!!
Having a blast at Peek into Preschool
February is "I LOVE TO READ" Month and Richie is a Mystery Reader!
With February being "I Love to Read" Month, what a better way to celebrate than having many mystery readers come and share their favorite books with students. I would encourage all of you to invite parents or others into read to students this month.
If you are interested, I would LOVE to come and visit each and every class sometime this month TO read some of my favorite stories. If you are interested in having me come and READ to your students, please send me an email with some times that will work out. My schedule fills up fast, but if I know a few days ahead of time, I promise to be there!
Copy / Paper Usage Reminder
Anything over 25 pages must be sent to the district print center with the exception of an occasional emergency. This really helps us keep costs down, as the printing services are much cheaper when done through the district print center.
In House Cost
· Printing at the school ends up costing approx. 10 ½ - 12 cents per copy (on paper we have already paid for using our program funds)
Print Center Cost
· All copies sent to district printing (no matter what type or color of paper) cost about 2 ½ cents (.0255) per copy – over a 75% savings (AND we don’t have to pay extra for the paper used….BONUS!!!)
Please continue to use district printing as often as you can. It saves our program budgets a lot of $$$ in the long run!
Meet Ms. Becki Fonder, Circle of Friends Preschool & ECFE Teacher
Hi, I'm Becki Fonder, and I'm a early childhood teacher and parent educator here at Edgewood. I have worked for PLSAS for over 20 years! I am married (Tim and I just celebrated our 29th anniversary!!!) and we have 3 kids (JP 26, Wil 24 and Jamie 18.) We live in Prior Lake, and some hobbies and activities I enjoy are reading, cooking, painting, boating, gardening, shopping, and being outside (in the warmer weather!) I love my job as an early childhood educator because I love children and seeing them excited to learn, and I love working with their families and helping to prepare kids for a successful start in education. Another perk about working at Edgewood is all my amazing coworkers:) It has been wonderful working with the group of committed teachers for so many years!
La ola del lago & Circle of Friends Registration 2016-17
Kindergarten registration for La ola del lago for 2016-17 is currently at 78 - this is more Kindergarten students than we currently have!
Circle of Friends registration for 2016-17 opened last week for current families, and now is open to the public February 1 - 14. As of Thursday, 1.28, enrollment was at 76. I only anticipate we will continue to grow!
A major contributing factor to our growth is the stellar reputation our programming has with families and students. All of our collective hard work is paying off as we continue to strive to improve and get better so we are able to provide the very best learning opportunities for our students!

Cute story from Mason Lampert (gr 1 LODL and former CoF preschooler)
First grade students were learning about habitats in science. The students were discussing in which habitats certain animals live. Sr. Ivan asked the students “¿Dónde viven los tucanes? (Where do toucans live?)”. Mason responded: “In paradise.” J
Update on Edgewood Advisory Council (EWAC) and La ola del lago Parent Teacher Committee (LODL PTC)
We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and involved parents at Edgewood. Here is quick update on where we are currently at.
- Kelly Wentz is this year's EWAC president, and Andi Hodgson is the co-president
- Maleigh Anderson is this year's LODL PTC president
- Both groups are working together more as one collective group to focus on the betterment of students
- MN State Statue states early learning programming MUST have an advisory committee
- As La ola del lago continues to grow, a formal PTC with a 501(c)3 non-profit status must be formed
What are current EWAC/LODL PTC initiatives:
- Creating a 501(c)(3), not for profit status for our group to aid in fundraising directly for La ola del lago. If you are familiar with creating, recording or budgeting for a not for profit and would be willing to help, we would appreciate hearing from you in any capacity!
- We also need occasional, on-call volunteers to drive the interns to/from events/activities. The ideal person would be able to seat all five interns and would be added to a list.
- Winter gear for interns - donations of any type are always welcome (if excess is received we will store it until needed for future interns).
- Volunteer Day
- Grandparent's Day
- Yearbook
- 2016-2017 Host families for Amity Interns- if your family would like to welcome an intern into your home for part or all of the school year, please let us know. Hosting an intern is an incredible learning experience for all family members.
Contact - If you would like to assist or learn more about any of the current initiatives or join a meeting, please contact Maleigh Anderson (maleighanderson@gmail.com) or Richie Kucinski
Meet Ms. Caren Way, Circle of Friends & ECFE Teacher
My name is Caren Way. I've worked for PLSAS for 16 years. I love all of the people I work with at EW. We have so many experts in our building, I learn something new every day. The best part of my job seeing the little people come into our classes with such enthusiasm for school and learning. I also love the things three year olds share with us. Three year olds speak the truth :).
I spend my time outside of school with my sweetheart Steve, as well as my children Zach, Ali, Belle, and Gavin. My God daughter, Lauren, also lives with me. There's always something going on with my crew!
My hobbies include taking photos and cleaning up after my kids. I also like to build weird stuff I see on Pinterest. I learned how to use a grinder recently and it's pretty awesome.
#PLSASchat ~ Tuesdays at 8:00 PM & Twitter
I would like to commend those of you who are continuing to use Twitter to post pictures, professional articles or videos, and sharing the story of Edgewood with our community stakeholders by using hashtag #EWExcellence. I would like to remind everyone our district does a weekly Twitter chat on Tuesdays at 8:00. Please feel free to follow and contribute to #PLSASchat

#PLSAS Referendum Information
There will be many more meetings in the upcoming weeks re: May PLSAS Referendum. Dr. Staloch will be planning a time sometime in March to come to Edgewood to speak with our entire staff. Here is the latest update, as of last week. Please continue to ask questions, or share the input email address listed for any parents or community members that may have comments. This will definitely take the entire village!
School Board Begins Planning for Growth
The Demographic Review Committee’s research of our enrollment growth
projections, combined with a study of our current classroom capacities
and a demographer’s analysis of our district, all point to continued enrollment
growth district wide, throughout all grade levels. As a result, the
school board has begun planning for a May referendum to accommodate
this growth. While the specifics of the referendum have not yet been
decided, a comprehensive facilities plan for all of our schools, including
Edgewood, is being conducted. The facilities plan includes researching:
- A new elementary school
- Additions for classroom and core space to add capacity at multiple sites
- Facility space options for innovative programs (Bridges ALC, SAGE,
La ola del lago, MNCAPS)
The school board will be collecting input and answering questions prior to
finalizing referendum details. There will be information presented at two
upcoming Information Meetings:
7:00 p.m. on February 11 at Prior Lake High School
7:00 p.m. on February 16 at Twin Oaks Middle School
In the meantime, the district has a web page that will continue to be
updated with the latest information surrounding our enrollment growth.

Our Mission & Vision: Who We Are @ La ola del lago Spanish Immersion & Edgewood School
In Closing....
While the Winter months of January and February can be cold and dark, I appreciate our relentless focus on student learning. Have a great week! Can you believe it's February?
