Stingray Scoop

February 2023

Mr Taylor - Lead Stingray

Happy February.

It's hard to believe that we are almost half way through the 3rd quarter. Progress reports are available in FOCUS on February 16th. Your classroom teacher is your point of contact if you need assistance with a particular assignment. You can also reach out to your child's guidance counselor if you need support with any previous course failures. Mrs. Blume serves students whose last name is "A-GL". Mrs. Cathcart serves "Go-O" and Mr. Elvin Padilla serving "P-Z".

We are also seeing a rise in inappropriate behaviors throughout the campus and on the school bus. Please start each day with a reminder of positive expectations to ensure our teachers have the best learning environment possible for all students. If you have any concerns regarding your child's behavior, please feel free to contact individual classroom teachers, your child's administrator or again our guidance counselors. Our PBIS program will be having regular recognition activities throughout the rest of the year. Be sure to ask your child about these activities.

Congratulations to our newly selected Stingray Baseball, Softball and Girls Lacrosse teams. I hope each one of you has the opportunity to come support our student athletes. Their schedule will be posted on our Athletic website as soon as they become available.

As always, feel free to reach out to me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. I am looking forward to working together with you, the staff and our students for a successful second semester!

Opportunity to "FIND" missing work

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during lunch we have an opportunity for students to work on any missing assignments from any class. Please check FOCUS regularly and remind your child they can report to room 2-108 during their lunch to work on those assignments. In addition, any students with course recovery needs may also attend.

Welcome Aboard Mr. Padilla!

Storm Grove is happy to welcome our new School Counselor, Mr. Padilla, to our campus. Mr. Padilla will work with students with last names P-Z. Stop by Guidance and meet him!

Parent Acknowledgement Forms

If you have not completed your Parent Acknowledgement Forms on your Focus Parent Portal, please do so as soon as possible. These forms are used for media, medical, library, and Guidance permission regarding your student.

Course Recovery

Any student who has failed a core class will be required to complete Course Recovery through our Edgenuity program. Edgenuity can be accessed through ClassLink anywhere you have an internet connection. Students are required to take and pass all three years of Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies for promotion to high school.

Parents - If your student requires Course Recovery, he or she will be notified by Guidance and information will be sent home. Please encourage your student to work through their assignments.

Rising 9th Graders

Please be on the lookout for information regarding the transition to high school.

SRHS Incoming Freshman Meeting is February 7th at 6:00pm in the SGMS Cafeteria.

Both VBHS and SRHS will have their schedule request forms available during the month of March. Information regarding how to access these forms will be sent out over the next few weeks.

SGMS Math Moves by your Children😊

SGMS Math Moves by your Children in February😊

6th Grade:

6th Grade mathematicians will work hard this month with percents. They will learn how to convert between percents, fractions, and decimals. During this unit they will learn how to find the percent of a number, find the whole, and estimate the percent of a number. After they complete this unit they will enter into their unit on Geometry which if always a fun unit for the kiddos!

6th Accelerated:

These 6th Grade mathematicians will spend most of the month having fun with Percents, including learning how to connect Ratios and Percents. They will learn how to calculate tax, tips and markups, discounts, commission and fees, and percent of error. At the end of the month they will enter into their unit on Geometry which is always a fun unit for the kiddos!

7th Grade:

These Stingray mathematicians will continue their unit of Geometry into the first half of the month. They will learn how to find the area of circles polygons and composite figures. Also in the unit is finding the circumference of circles and the surface area and volume of cylinders. This unit also includes scale drawings which is also a lot of fun as they get to do a “minion” activity. Enlarging and shrinking figures. This will take them through the whole month!

7thAccelerated:

As we head into the month of February these mathematicians will be working on their unit of systems of equations. They will solve these systems by graphing. They will be able to determine the number of solutions to a system of equations by the end of the unit. About mid February they will be switching to their Geometry unit which always brings a smile to their faces😊 They will explore circles, surface area and volume.

8th Grade Pre-Algebra:

For the month of February our 8th Grade Pre-Algebra Stingrays will continue exploring angle relationships which is extremely important for 10th grade Geometry. They will work with the Pythagorean Theorem to find distance between two points on an coordinate plane and the converse of the theorem. They will also learn The Triangle Inequality Theorem. They will then move into transformations of figures on the coordinate plane for the second half of the month. They all tend to like the geometry unit😊

Algebra Honors:

The month of February our Algebra mathematicians will finish up their unit on Exponential Function and midway through the month begin a fun unit on Polynomials. Most teachers and students find this unit really cool as it like solving a puzzle. Putting it together and taking it apart😊

Geometry Honors:

In February these Stellar Stingray Mathematicians will finish their unit on triangles and similarity. With this knowledge they will dive into the world of right triangles and Trigonometry (the study of angles and of the angular relationships of planar and three-dimensional figures). Included in this unit will be trigonometric ratios used with right triangles, solving real world problems involving right triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem, solving real world problems finding the area of a triangle given two sides and the included angle and finishing up the month applying the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to solve real world problems. WHEW!!!!!
