A Message from our Superintendent
Dear HSE Parents, Guardians and Staff,
As you may have read or heard on the news, there is a rally taking place at the statehouse on Tuesday, November 19 called Red For Ed. This event is being organized by the Indiana State Teachers Association to bring attention to concerns they believe diminish their profession and compromise public education.
Due to the large number of teacher absences expected next Tuesday, I announced the cancellation of school for students on November 19 during Wednesday night’s board meeting. That day will be converted to a teacher work day, much like we have built into our calendar at the beginning, middle and end of the year. We regret the disruption this may cause for you and your family, but with reduced staffing, we are unable to ensure students will receive a quality day of learning in a safe environment.
This decision was not made lightly. We examined as many options as possible that would both support our teachers who want to exercise their rights to advocate for public education, while maintaining our commitment to educate your children.
Further, I announced that I would be recommending that students return from Winter Break on Monday, January 6, 2020 to make up for this lost day of instruction.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools has been fortunate in that we have been able to offer competitive salaries to our teachers, but we also understand the burdens that are placed on educators and share a number of those concerns, such as:
- the evaluations of schools and teachers are based on a flawed student assessment program,
- funding for K-12 schools has been syphoned away in support of vouchers and charters,
- and licensing requirements for teachers continue to be added without provisions for funding or time.
We encourage anyone who believes in Indiana public schools to make your voice heard through emails, phone calls, letters and meetings with your state legislators.
Thank you for understanding and support of our students, staff and schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Allen Bourff
Superintendent

A Message from the Cafe
The Cardinal Café will be serving the traditional Thanksgiving Meal next Wednesday, Nov. 20th! This meal will feature carved turkey breast, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner roll, warm cinnamon apples and pumpkin pie. We will also have turkey sandwich with cheese or PBJ sandwiches available, however, there will be no other hot entrees offered.
Please note the green beans are made with a ham base that contains pork. For students who do not eat pork, we will have green beans without the base- the student will just need to request it when they come through the line. For any additional ingredient or allergen information, please contact the Cafeteria Manager.

Why Writing Workshop?
Writing workshop mirrors the work of “real writers”'
Writing workshop is a highly structured research-based curriculum that engages students in a complex, multi-layered process that resembles the work of professional authors. Other curriculums may move students through a process (pre-write, draft, revise, edit and publish) to achieve a desired product, but writing workshop goes further, engaging students in activities that include cultivating a writerly life— exploring, collecting, reading, talking, contemplating, co-authoring and questioning. Like professional writers, students in writing workshop know that “making something” takes substantial time and thought. The writing process is not a rigid formula. Students, like professional authors, learn to manage their writing projects through these complex and sometimes “slippery” stages.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).

We Are Learning...
Reading
In reading this week we spent time reading the books that were purchased from the book fair! Thank you to all that donated books to our classroom! We spent time talking about the main idea of the books, characters, plot, and setting. We also talked about why some books we liked more than others and turned and talked with partners to express opinions about each book. It was interesting to hear them talk about the reasons why they did or didn't like the books read.
Writing
Last week, we wrapped up our study of nonfiction writing with a celebration! We've decided to spend the next two and a half weeks allowing the kids to use all of the skills that they've learned throughout our personal narrative unit as well as nonfiction to write freely and apply those skills to their writing. It has been amazing to see how involved the kids have gotten into their writing this week and how many different places in their books they have applied the skills that they've learned thus far this year. I can't wait to see where this freedom takes them next week!
Math
This week in math we worked on subtracting across the zeros. The kids really got the hang of this but then felt challenged when we practiced this in various ways. We also focused on place value and base ten and focus on why we regroup. We will continue to practice and review this concept!
