Superintendent's Message
Carlsbad Unified Board Transitions
At next week’s Board meeting we will be welcoming two newly-elected members and congratulating a current trustee on her re-election, as we say a fond farewell to two long-serving members who are retiring.
At 4:30 pm on December 14, we’ll administer the Oath of Office to three Trustees (the ceremony will precede the regular meeting, and will be held at the District Office):
- Michele Tsutagawa Ward was elected to represent Trustee Area 1
- Gretchen Vurbeff was elected to represent Trustee Area 2
- Kathy Rallings was re-elected to represent Trustee Area 5 (this will be her third term of office, being first elected to an at-large position in 2014).
We look forward to the tenure of our Trustees, and we’re thankful for their commitment, dedication, and willingness to serve the students, staff and community of Carlsbad Unified.
We would also like to recognize and thank our two outgoing Trustees, Claudine Jones and Veronica Williams, for their years of exemplary service to our school district.
Trustee Jones served on the Board for nine years, and Trustee Williams served for twelve years. During their tenure, we have accomplished much, including the adoption of our Career Technical Education strategic plan; the adoption of our Instructional Technology strategic plan; the implementation of the Local Control Accountability Plan and a transition to a new school funding formula; the addition of the A-G high school graduation requirement for all students; the successful opening of Sage Creek High School and the on-going school construction projects funded by Measure HH and other funding sources; and our district's updated Mission/Vision and Graduate Profile. Most importantly, during their time on the Board, our students have achieved at high levels and have gone on to do amazing things in our community, our state, our country, and our world.
Trustee Jones shared, “I want to thank all of our families, my constituents, for your steadfast support. Thank you to our outstanding teachers, principals, classified staff, cabinet and superintendent. We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals in our schools. And I sincerely appreciate this Board. I feel honored to have had you all as colleagues in this challenging and dynamic work, and the collaboration and common ground we've always found to prioritize our students, staff and families. It has been an honor and privilege to serve our community with you. And always remember what we've all come to learn in this work – that often, the students most in need are rarely the loudest in the room. Please keep working to make sure they're seen.”
Trustee Williams shared, “I’m proud of our award-winning schools, academic and athletic programs, and our teachers and staff. It’s been a privilege to serve on the Carlsbad School Board. I’m thankful for being part of a high-functioning governing board where we can have civil discourse, and agree and disagree with respect and civility. I appreciate the board’s integrity, diverse views, and professionalism. And always remember – Don’t be afraid to make hard decisions, even when they are unpopular. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what is right for our students. Don’t be afraid of the challenge.”
Thank you, Trustees Jones and Williams, for your dedication and steadfast service to our students, staff, and community. You will be missed, but your legacy will continue.
Thank you, Trustees Williamson, Pearson and Rallings, for your ongoing commitment to our schools and your continuing support of our mission and vision.
And welcome, Trustees Vurbeff and Ward - we’re thrilled to welcome you to our governance team!
