Peterson's News
9/13-9/17
I love it when the weather is beautiful on the weekend and I hope all of you were able to get out and enjoy it!
Teachers will teach the first lesson of our Second Step Curriculum this week. CASEL defines Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Here is the link to the CASEL website: https://casel.org/what-is-sel/# and below you will find more information about Second Step.
We had incredible spirit on Friday! It was wonderful to see so much purple and gold! Our primary (K-2) Spirit Day winner is Mrs. Ammons' room. They had 100% participation and our intermediate (3-5) winner is Mrs. Decker's room. 1A and 5D will each get to keep a traveling stuffed panther and have a sign outside their door for the month.
As always if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Best,
Alli Landstrom

Second Step
This week, we will begin our first lesson of our Second Step curriculum. The Second Step curriculum teaches students the Social Emotional Learning standards in a developmentally appropriate way. Please see the following link for more information: https://www.isbe.net/Pages/Social-Emotional-Learning-Standards.aspx. The curriculum aligns with our Panther Pledges of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Here is the link if you’re interested in more information: https://www.secondstep.org/second-step-social-emotional-learning
Each month has a theme. The themes are Setting the Stage, Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, Problem Solving, and Friendship Skills. For the first four weeks, we have been Setting the Stage by reviewing our Panther Pledges of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Beginning on Monday, our school-wide theme is Skills for Learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners. Second Step lessons teach skills for learning. You’ll be receiving a Home Link this week describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child to practice them. We hope you enjoy them!
The Home Links do not need to be returned.
- In Kindergarten - Third grade, Home Links are sent home based upon the content, so a Home Link will not come home every week in these grade levels.
- In Fourth and Fifth grade, a Home Link will be sent home every week on Monday.
All links for all grade levels are posted on our website: http://peterson.ipsd.org/Subpage.aspx?id=1463. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me or your child's teacher.

Notification of Positive COVID-19 Cases in Schools
Positive cases of COVID-19 in your child's school can be found on the District's COVID Dashboard. The dashboard includes all positive cases of COVID-19 reported to District 204 for individuals who were on campus. The information is updated each Monday by 4 pm. If your child is in close contact with someone who tested positive, a member of the COVID-19 Response Team will notify you directly regarding the need to quarantine as a precaution. Additional information found on this page includes the current transmission level and a link to the corresponding mitigation strategies.
Parents will be notified if their child is considered a close contact with someone who tested positive. Our COVID-19 Response Team at Peterson is our Registered School Nurse, Patti Mathison , and our Certified School Nurse, Christina Cicero. If your child is considered a close contact, you will be given a Quarantine Information Sheet (K-2, 3-5) along with your child's return date, to provide information in what schooling will look like for your child during quarantine. Additionally, I have linked here the District’s Fall Plan with slides 10-13 providing information regarding isolation and quarantine for our elementary students.
