RES News
May 14, 2020
Hello Bobcat Families! Read below for a lot of information from Mrs. Strope!
School Closure
The next round of instructional materials will be available on Monday, May 18 from 8:30-4:30 in the front vestibule. Paper packets will only be prepared for those who communicate with their teacher that one is needed. All grade level materials are available electronically. You may also drop off any completed work or library books.
All of the staff members at RES are terribly saddened by the closure of school for the rest of the year. Although we understand the decision, we miss our Bobcats terribly. Please be in contact with your child's teacher, our school Social Worker, Jessica Chadwick (Jessica.chadwick@onslow.k12.nc.us), or me ( laurie.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us ) if you need anything during this time.
The State Board of Education has deemed the following regarding grading for the remainder of this school year:
Elementary and middle school students will not receive traditional grades for this year. Instead of final grades in elementary schools, teachers will provide year-end feedback for students regarding learning from the full academic school year.
Knowing that a "grade" will not be assigned for the year, it is important to realize that students and teachers don't get this time back. It is vital that students continue to engage in remote learning until the end of the school year. Teachers have prioritized content for the remainder of the year to include what is most important for success in the next grade level. Remote learning is difficult and we certainly don't want any backwards slide in student mastery of the curriculum. You may still see grades in Microsoft Teams (grades 3-5) but these grades are there for students and parents to use as feedback on the level of mastery of content standards.
The focus of instructional materials for June 1-June 9 is on supplemental review and enrichment. No new material will be taught during this time and the activities will be designed for students to complete without the assistance of a teacher or a laptop. The activities will be listed on the school web page starting May 27. If you need a paper copy, please work out arrangements with your child's teachers. www.onslow.k12.nc.us/richlandses

Closing Out the Year
What a year it has been!
Returning School Items and Picking up Personal Belongings:
We will do our mass collection/distribution on June 4 and June 5 from 12-7pm.
In the BUS CIRCLE, students in grades 3-5 should plan to return their school-issued laptop and charger. During the same time in the FRONT of the school, students can pick up their personal belongings from the classroom (we will have them bagged and labeled for you), and/or drop off any school materials such as library books. You will not have to get out of the car, both of these collection sites will be drive-thru service. Please make every effort to drive through during these set times.
Yearbooks: If you purchased a yearbook, they will be available during the times above and will be packed in with your personal belongings. We will have a few extra yearbooks available for purchase. They are $20 and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis, starting at 9am on Monday, June 8 in the front office. Checks should be made payable to RES.
Ident-A-Kid Cards: If you purchased these, they will be in student packed belongings on June 4 and 5 as well.
Class pictures/spring pictures: If you have not already picked these up, spring picture proofs will be put in your student's packed belongings. We do have a few extra class pictures. Call the front office if you are interested in purchasing one.
Report Cards: Report cards will be distributed on Tuesday, June 9th. Please let your child's homeroom teacher know if you want the report card digitally or if you prefer to have a paper copy mailed to you.
Milestone Celebrations
While we are so proud of all of our students, RES typically has a special program for our Kindergarteners and 5th graders. Our plans to honor these groups are as follows:
Fifth graders will be honored with a drive-thru celebration on Monday, June 8 from 5-7. Families are encouraged to drive through by the front of the school and pick up a little treat and be celebrated by our staff. Also, beginning on the evening of June 5, each RES 5th grader will be represented with a pinwheel display at our entrance. We wish our 5th graders the best of luck in middle school!
Kindergarteners will have a parade on Wednesday, June 3, beginning at 6pm. Families are encouraged to decorate their cars for the parade. Parents should enter the parking lot in a single file line and the parade will go through the normal car line. Once you are on RES property, a staff member will give your Kindergartener a graduation cap. Families are limited to one car and siblings can pick their time. We will broadcast the parade on Facebook Live on the Richlands Elementary School Facebook page. Spectators are not permitted and no parking will be allowed due to social distancing requirements. Classes should begin at the following times:
Summers/Zimmer 6:00
Jarman 6:10
Lesser 6:20
Hannan 6:30
Barnett 6:40
Dougherty 6:50
Flory 7:00
SGN - Some Good News

Leader in Me News
LIM Survey:
Each year Leader in Me School parents, students, and staff take a survey to determine areas of needed growth in the areas of leadership, culture, and academics. Only 4th and 5th graders are asked to take the survey and their teachers have given them the link in their Teams assignments. All K-5 parents are asked to take the survey. Thank you in advance!
