The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 28: 05/10/2021
Hello Dragons-
Welcome to the first week of Hexter 6! As we start the last term or the regular school year, it’s a good time to start thinking about summer school. Summer school is a great option to earn some additional credits and keep yourself on track for graduation. You can earn up to 2 credits in just four weeks!
Also- if you haven’t yet now is a great time to get vaccinated for covid! Follow this link to schedule an appointment! If you need help, just ask any adult at RLA. We’d be happy to help you get set up for a vaccination.

Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one OR come to my office for one when we were in school!
Blue Heron
This week at RLA we are BLUE HERONS: “Make a stand for what you believe in and do what feels right in spite of any judgment or disapproval from others.” The card of all cards—the blue heron is the picture on the outside of all the cards for a reason. Whenever I get this card, I puff up and feel a little taller, not out of ritual for getting the card, but out of how it makes me feel when I read the message—do what feels right for you no matter what. I feel empowered by the blue heron, it reminds me of my inner strength.
Have you ever seen a blue heron in real life? They have a subtle confidence that does not come from their size rather their demeanor, the way they carry themselves. When they take off, it feels like a slow process, one that seems to take thought and time, even when if it happens quickly. The blue heron has a long, purposeful stride that proves to be very efficient for getting where it wants to be. They can literally spear fish out of the water with quick moves striking at just the right time to get the fish—like lightning. Their long thin legs suggest that we do not need to have massive legs to remain stable, rather our inner strength and self-determination holds us up. I think the heron reflects how to take pride in our achievements, how to persevere, and to rely on our judgment and instincts. The blue heron actually sounds a bit like a dragon…
I think I would like to talk to someone...

In this week's The Science Behind COVID we will look at why you and your loved ones should get the vaccine. Besides all the boring stuff like, "keep you from dying", "out of the hospital" or "suffer from permanent damage due to illness" I want to focus on getting back to "normal". The graphic I am using for this week is the new CDC guidelines for how to be safe and reduce your risk of getting COVID. You will note that, if you are vaccinated, we can do MOST things with a fair amount of safety. Without protection, the risk goes up much higher. Also keep in mind that the vaccine protects your children, parents, and grandparents who may not be able to get the vaccine or at higher risk!
