A Weekly Look at Grant Elementary School & the Grant PTA

Week of September 2, 2019

A Message from Principal Grey

Dear Grant Community,

Thank you all for supporting our effort to optimize our traffic safety at the front of our school every day. We appreciate your awareness and commitment to student safety.

It has recently been brought to our attention that there is also unsafe driving and parking taking place behind the school. We have received several complaints from our neighbors on Sunnyslope Road behind our school. Due to U-turns in the middle of their street, their cars are being accidentally knicked, and they have also reported being unable to leave their homes due to blocked driveways. Other concerns include parked cars in front of fire hydrants, cars being parked perpendicular to the curb and cars being parked far away from the curb. Our neighbors were kind enough to reach out to us first before notifying the safety officers at the Petaluma Police Department.

Please be mindful and respectful of our neighbors and refrain from illegal parking and unsafe U-turns behind the school.

Thank you so much,

Ms. Grey

Grant TIDE Committee's First Meeting, 9/18 in Library

Please join us for our first meeting on Wednesday, September 18th from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm in the Grant Library. We will come together as a school community and discuss ideas on our school's approach to inclusivity, equity, and diversity. TIDE (Team for Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity) groups are forming at each site to open up a dialogue about how we can ensure that each of our students, families and staff members feels welcome, acknowledged and safe on our campuses.

Here is a bit more information about TIDE from the committee's district-wide leadership:

After hearing stories of racism and bias from high school students in our hometown of Petaluma, a group of community members started a group called Team for Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity (TIDE). TIDE is a community-led group exploring how to make our schools more safe, inclusive, and welcoming for all of our diverse TK-12 students, families, teachers, and administrators. It is a goal that all schools in Petaluma -- from preschool to high school -- have a TIDE chapter of their own. The citywide TIDE group is made up of representatives from each school and serves as a place of inspiration and collaboration for each school.

Picture Days, 9/19 & 9/20

This year Grant is going to use a wonderful new school picture company called Mugsy Clicks. This Marin based company will be taking photos of our Grant students on 9/19 and 9/20 and your child's teacher will let you know which one is your picture day. There are some great tips on the website that might help you prepare. https://www.mugsyclicks.com.

We are so excited about many components of Mugsyclicks, and one thing we are looking forward to the most is the fact you will be able to view several different portraits of your student online after your photo days and choose the ones you like best. You will then be able to order packages of photos right off of their website. More information will be sent home closer to our picture days.

Grant Garden Thrives

Whitney Barrilleaux, one of the chairs of the Grant Garden Committee, is pictured opening the gate for a group of 1st graders to pick some tomatoes and cucumbers. She'll often open the gate once or twice a week after school. If you see her, any one is welcome to come in and pick a few fruits or veggies.
