Welcome to the back to school issue of the newsletter of the Hubbard Learning Commons, where every day is a celebration of books and reading. The new school year is always a time to look forward to the great things we will be doing together as well as celebrate what we are already doing. In the Hubbard Learning Commons, this is the time of year we focus on authors and illustrators, those individuals whose work inspires all of us to make connections with each other and our world. Recently during our library periods, 1st graders have been writing and illustrating their own color "poof" books inspired by the book Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger while 2nd and 3rd graders are enjoying a read-aloud of Quinny & Hopper by Adriana Brad Schanen as preparation for a visit by the author next month. 4th graders have been hearing about what is involved in participating in Battle of the Books and 5th graders are using their chromebooks to research individual authors or illustrators while learning about the research process.
This newsletter highlights some of the activities that take place in the Commons and some upcoming events. I hope you find it informative. Please always feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or comments or would like more information about any of the library's resources.

"Who Was" series
One of the most popular book series in the library is the "Who Was" series of biographies. Our students really enjoy reading about famous people from history and today in an accessible biography format. This series is supported by a website where students can challenge themselves to identify the correct person based on a series of clues. Check it out using the link below!
Battle of the Books is coming!
Thanks to a grant from the SEF, all students in 4th and 5th grade are once again invited to participate in Battle of the Books this year. Battle of the Books, sponsored by the New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL), is a reading incentive program where teams of students share the reading of 15 books and compete against other teams to see who can answer the most "In what book..." questions. The program is voluntary and open to all 4th and 5th grade students. Interested students are forming teams of 4 or 5 students which will begin meeting after Thanksgiving once a week during lunch recess in the Learning Commons under the direction of Mrs. Stubeck. See below for the titles teams will be reading in each grade.

Author, Author!
Author Event - November 14 - Grades 2 and 3
Students in grades 2 and 3 will be treated to a visit from Montclair, NJ resident Adriana Brad Schanen, the author of Quinny & Hopper and the upcoming Quinny & Hopper Partners in Slime due to be released in November. To prepare for this visit, we have been reading aloud from Quinny & Hopper, a story about two unlikely friends. For more information about the author, visit http://www.adrianabradschanen.com/
Author Visit - January 24, 2017 - Grades 1 - 5
On January 24, 2017 students in grades 1-5 will enjoy a presentation by Dan Yaccarino, who is an author, illustrator, and television producer of The Backyardigans and Oswald. This presentation is brought to us through the generosity of the PTO and its Cultural Arts Committee. We will be spending time becoming familiar with the author's work during library classes as we get closer to his visit. For more information about Dan, visit http://www.danyaccarino.com/
About us
The Hubbard Learning Commons (HLC) is staffed by School Librarian Carole Stubeck and Library Assistant Laura Brody along with a supportive crew of parent volunteers. All students at Lincoln-Hubbard visit the HLC for 30 minutes of instruction each week where students are instructed and engaged in a variety of activities designed to ensure they become effective users of information and ideas and also may borrow books to enjoy at home. Classes may also schedule use of the learning commons and librarian for research purposes in support of curricular areas of study throughout the school year.
