MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL - Brett Wille
Happy Friday Bearcat Families!
It’s been a great week here at MHS, the first full week of school for us. Our students have been amazing, adapting to the school routine again and embracing all of the beginning of the year logistics that we have to re-teach during the first couple of weeks of school. There is such a positive vibe right now that can be felt throughout the building, it’s nice to have that feeling again here at MHS.
I’ve had the chance to visit most of the classes this week and have seen so many great things happening. As a staff our instructional focus this year is around starting each class period with Purpose, which is one of our Core Values. This includes a positive greeting at the door, a meaningful warm-up that is connected to the learning for the day, and a clear start to the lesson where teachers share the learning objectives with students. Doing these three things to start every lesson is a proven way to increase student learning and proactively set every class period up for success. It’s been really fun to see such strong engagement from students in classes and we believe this all starts with that purposeful start, each and every period.
I also want to give some kudos to our students for their amazing behavior at our sporting events. As a part of our week 1 Launch we taught our entire student body how Bearcats behave at these events, representing MHS with class while having fun and cheering on our student-athletes as they compete. Students also learned some of the cheers that we love to do at games and it’s been great to see them embrace this at our sporting events … we’re super proud of them! A special shout out to our Athletic Director, Ashley Tuiasosopo, for working with our coaches, student-athletes, and our student fans to embody an approach that demonstrates strong sportsmanship and class throughout our programs. Athletic events are probably the most notable space where our students engage with other students and families outside of Monroe and it’s important that we model the values that we believe are important. So far this year our students have done a phenomenal job … well done Bearcats!
Finally, please note that our start of the year Open House is on Wednesday, September 28th, from about 6:00 - 9:00 pm. More information will follow next week, but please mark your calendars for that evening as we hope you are able to join us.
Have a wonderful weekend Bearcat families … thank you again for all that you do to support our efforts here at MHS and our amazing students at home. GO BEARCATS!

¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana!
¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana! Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Hispanic Heritage month started on September 15th and goes through October 16th.
This month we have started celebrating Hispanic Heritage by having Latin music playing in the mornings, and putting up signs. Starting Monday, we will have even more color and decoration around the school– so keep your eyes open for that!
Our kitchen staff is also getting into our celebrations. Here is a message from them:
Mondays will be our Hispanic flavors day -
- 9/19: Beef Nachos w/homemade salsa & house pickled jalapenos
- 9/26: Walking Tacos w/homemade salsa & house pickled jalapenos
- 10/3: Pork Soft Tacos w/homemade salsa & house pickled jalapenos
- 10/10: Red Enchiladas (beef w/red sauce); homemade salsa & house pickled jalapenos
But, this is just the start! We are going to be adding in more things to celebrate as we move through this month. Please help us by opening this QR code and filling out a quick survey to help us know how you would like to see us celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month:
MHS ATHLETICS
We had an exciting week of sports at MHS:
Our Volleyball team kicked off the week with a thriller against Meadowdale on Monday. After dropping the first 2 sets to the Mavericks, the girls rallied back and claimed the last 3 sets in stunning fashion picking up their first victory for the season.
Our Girls Soccer team bounced back after a tough loss to the Mavericks and defeated Lynnwood last night improving their record to 2-1.
The Boys Tennis program had a fantastic week picking up 2 team victories out of their 3 matches.
Girls Swim and Dive had their first meet of the season this week and did a stellar job. Our Dive program is back in action and Madelyn Clark led the way for the Bearcat divers. We also had stellar performances from our 200 Medley Relay (swam by Kayme Hartway, Rowyn Grant, Claudia Izquierdo & Sky Nipper), Summayah Said in the 50 Free and Rowyn Grant in 100 Breaststroke.
Stay up to date with all of our athletic teams by following MHS Athletics on our social media pages - Facebook & Twitter. We will have an Instagram page soon. Also be sure to check out our MHS Athletics website for game schedules and athletic information.
Admission is charged at the following sporting events: Basketball, Football, Soccer, Volleyball & Wrestling. Please bring cash or check as debit or credit cards are not accepted. Ticket prices can be found online here: MHS Athletic Admissions.
CONGRATS TO OUR BOLD BEARCATS
Thank you Sophia Lochmann! Your work during the bearcat launch was fantastic. You helped organize the cheerleaders during Friday's assembly and rally and showed support of her team, peers and admin as well as she also encouraged others to feel purposeful while engaging them in conversation and leading them into positive support of our school.
Thank you Piper Brown! On the first day with just Juniors, you were asked to help a new student who was brand new to the school. You immediately helped out through the first day check in and made sure you were all set for the day. Thank you for supporting your classmate.
Thank you Jessi Young! You assisted a new student in the hallway yesterday. You looked at the new student's schedule, identified her next class and said, "I'll take you there." This is a great example of both unity and support.
Thank you Brianna Pham! You were a HUGE help to Ms. Conklin in moving a class set of very heavy books from the downstairs bookroom to the Library! Thank you for supporting others in their lifelong learning.
