Stillwater Elementary School

A Note from the Principal
Greetings,
I hope you and your families are enjoying this beautiful week. I am so happy that we had amazing weather and could be outside. Things are busy here at school. The new playground is just about finished and I am confident the children will be so happy to use it. We have to wait for the final inspection so, until then, it is not open for use. We want to make sure everything is safe.
We are also preparing for NYS Testing for students in grades 3-5. Next week students will take the ELA portion of the test and it is computer based. We do not put pressure on our students in regards to this test. We are teaching them to have a variety of tools that they can pull from to use on the test as well as in life.
Thank you for all of the participation in PARP. It was another successful year and the children had a blast! This month we celebrate Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, although we celebrate our friends with autism each and every day. We encourage everyone to participate in our Spirit Week beginning Monday and we will culminate with Autism Acceptance Day on 4/21. We do need parent volunteers so please email me if you are available that day.
Enjoy the rest of the week,
Rebecca Toleman
Elementary Principal
Thank you for your continued support!
Respectfully,

Cell Phones
I want to remind you of our Student Handbook which indicates that elementary students are not to have cell phones in school. If they do have them, they must be in their backpack and turned off or they will be confiscated. This also goes for SmartWatches. Students are not to be texting during the school day.
This may or may not shock you but we have students in kindergarten with cell phones. As a parent, I completely understand the pressures you feel to get your child a phone. I strongly encourage you to wait until they are older and developmentally ready. The world is ever changing and can be scary and having access to so much at their fingertips can be unsafe.

NYS Testing
Students in grades 3-5 will be taking NYS Assessments in both ELA and Math again this year. This year is the first year students are assessed on the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards. The ELA assessment runs April 19th-April 21st and is taken on the computer. The Math assessment runs May 2nd-May 4th and students will take that on paper.
If you have any questions on the assessments, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or myself. You can also visit the NYSED website: http://www.nysed.gov/state-assessment/elementary-and-intermediate-level-tests
