The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - November 29, 2020
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
Happy Sunday! I hope you all enjoyed your extended weekend and took the time to do something you personally enjoy. For my own family, it was great to slow down and just relax a little. My daughter had this past week off from her college classes, so it was great to see her relax a little and we could spend a little more time together.
As we come back together tomorrow for learning, we have three weeks until our Winter Break. During these three weeks, there is a lot of teaching and learning that occurs and I ask for your continued support with your student(s) daily participation. If you are in need of some extra support for your student(s), please do reach out. We are in this together and I am committed to each student at Cottage Lake!
As I shared previously, all progress reports have been mailed or emailed to families. If you did not receive one, please email us so we can get it to you quickly. If you have any questions about the progress report, please reach out to your student's teacher. More comprehensive report cards will be shared with families at the end of our semester, which is at the end of January.
Thank you for your continued support! We could not do this without you.
Let's make this a great entry into December.
Take Care!
Jen Welch, Principal
•• SCHOOL NEWS ••
Care Team for Families & Students
Hello Cottage Lake families,
I'm reaching out to check in and see how distance learning is going for your student(s)? Is there anything specific we can do to support your student's needs? We have been working with many Cottage Lake families on technology support, working with students supporting organization (schedules/checklists/navigating Schoology), and finding the right place for them to set up their learning area.
We also have a lunch club available to all students. If your child is not currently participating and would like to, please let me know. This social time can be a vital connection for your student with others in their classroom. We also have availability to meet with students one-on-one or in small groups if they need help with something specific or just need to chat.
If your family has other specific needs, please let me know. The Northshore Foundation has multiple types of resources available to help families, and I can offer some direction as well for community resources.
During this time of remote learning, I do not have regular hours at school. Email is the best way to reach me as I am working from home and checking my email regularly throughout the day. We also encourage families to complete this form to share if there is a need you are experiencing or a way we could be of additional support. https://forms.gle/Fq5L7WCTcrdNNJkd9
Please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know how I can best support your family and your Cottage Lake learner!
Take care and stay healthy,
Nurse Audrey

Highly Capable Screening and Assessment
The Accelerated Models and Programs Department is working on the 2020-2021 testing plan for students with highly capable needs.
Students in grades 6 & 7
We plan to begin by remotely administering the NNAT3 to students who were referred for testing or are new to Northshore in grades 6 and 7. Our department will contact the families of these students when we are ready to begin screening their student(s). Questions may be directed to hicap@nsd.org.
Students in grades K-5
We are still working on the highly capable screening and assessment schedule for grades K-5. Our department will update families when we can test.
Thank you,
Accelerated Models and Programs Department

Becoming a volunteer
At Cottage Lake, we have always had a very strong foundation of classroom and PTA volunteers. This year, we are all thinking outside the box and looking for new, creative ways we can welcome volunteers into the remote classrooms. As our classrooms continue to establish routines and systems, teachers will be ready to think about how volunteers could be helpful to them.
To prepare for becoming a volunteer, there are several steps we need you to complete. One important note is that our background check form will need to be updated EACH YEAR! In the past, we have asked for them to be updated every two years, but to keep our information the most up-to-date, this is a shift we are making district-wide.
Please visit this NSD LINK to find all the steps you will need to follow to complete your volunteer paperwork. Please click on the bar that says, "Online Volunteer Application Process" for all the steps that need to be completed.
Thank you for considering becoming a Cottage Lake volunteer!
Need Technology?
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
For quick links:
- CLICK HERE to place an order for DAILY MEALS. [The order window time will be 2:00 PM-11:59 PM the day prior to meal pick-up. Order include breakfast and lunch, including 16oz of milk. Orders placed for a Friday pick-up will also include meals for the weekend.]
- CLICK HERE to place an order for WEEKLY MEAL PACKS. [Weekly Meal Packs will include breakfast and lunch for an entire week, including a gallon of milk. The order window will open at 2:00 PM every Wednesday and close at 2:00 PM every Thursday. Pick up for these meals will be on Wednesday the following week.]
