The Scientific Revolution
Emma J.P. 3rd Period
What was the change ?
The scientific revolution was a time when people began to show more interest in the world around them. A time when people no longer focused on religion, but on the why & how of anything, & everything, because people wanted a clearer way to understand their surroundings.
Who were the people associated with the change ?
Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus created an understandable heliocentric theory. He completely abandoned the traditional astronomy (because of the absence of unity and harmony &violation of circular motion). He also believed that astronomy had to provide a detailed physical system of the world.
Johannes Kepler
Johannes Kepler devoted his life to finding mathematical principals of order, which caused him to abandon the platonic idea of Uniform Circular Motion. Kepler also came up with the following theories:
- Planets travel around the sun
- the square of the time where planets orbit the sun is the same proportion of the mean distance of the sun
- planets orbit in symmetric circles
Galileo Galilei
Galileo was known as the father of science. He used a homemade telescope and observed that the sun was not soon, but was jagged and rough .He also observed that planets shine because of reflected lights. While looking through his homemade telescope, he observed that Aristotle's theory(geocentric theory) was invalid, and that Copernicus was correct.
Galileo's telesecope
Galileo created a homemade telescope & made many discoveries with it, many of which corrected the theories of past scientists
Copernican Theory
The Copernican theory states that the sun is in the center of other orbiting planets. (Heliocentric Theory)
Which one?
The model on the left shows Aristotle's geocentric theory
The image on the right shows the heliocentric theory, which was discovered by Copernicus & confirmed by Galileo
How did the change impact society at the time ?
At the time, the people's new focal point was science, astronomy in particular. As science became more advanced, the church began to get less attention, but Galileo & Copernicus challenged it. The church teachings implied that the Earth was in the center of the universe, but Copernicus & Galileo observed differently.
How is that change evident in today's modern society ?
In our world today, many of us would agree with the Copernican theory, saying that the sun ,is indeed, in the center of several orbiting planets. Modern society has made more advanced models of the technology used, like telescopes. We now have an idea of what space is like, and because of that we can study our universe more & more, and still continue to do so. There are satellites and telescopes around the other planets in our solar system , and without the help of these scientists ,we wouldn't be as advanced as we are today! :)
