Copper Hill Library
March 2019
Around the library...
We began March by celebrating Read Across America with a Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day! We have some REALLY creative students here at Copper Hill! See pictures below.
- Kindergarten finished up their folktale unit with a little bit of fairy tale science! After reading The Three Little Pigs, we discussed the meaning of strength and what kind of materials would build strong houses. Then we applied the scientific process to answer the question: which material will make the strongest structure? Drinking straws, popsicle sticks or Legos? Students hypothesized, experimented and recorded their findings!
- First grade worked on a mini-research project using non-fiction resources (like PebbleGo and Epic) to answer questions. Each student chose an animal and brainstormed things they wanted to know about it. After modeling this process as a group, students used IPads to access PebbleGo and Epic to read through articles and books and record the answers as they found them!
- Second grade did some reading about a famous woman in honor of Women's History Month. Then they had a chance to preview some of the brand new books we've received in the library!
- Third grade did an author study on Jon Klassen. We read his Hat trio and looked at how much his books depend on the relationship between illustrations and text. Students were also able to practice their inferring skills and flex their illustrating muscles.
- Fourth grade honored Women's History Month by selecting a woman to research. After reading about their person, students created bio-poems to share what they learned!
Students in ALL grades also began prepping for our upcoming author visit with Audrey Vernick in April!
