Principal's Newsletter: Taking a DIVE into the HIVE
Principal's Summer Learning Challenge
After a long school year, we all crave the lazy days of summer. Taking time to enjoy the summer and all the activities this season affords is a great way to create lasting memories. Unfortunately, although many of these experiences can have traces of learning benefits, many children experience something we dread in the educational world–"summer slide." In other words, there is a drastic regression in the learning your child experienced during the school year in both reading and math. So why is "summer slide" still a reality in the twenty-first century?
Truth be told, children thrive when routines are in place. But, unfortunately, during the summer, many of the structures present throughout the school year are no longer in play. As a result, reading and the maintenance of math facts fall to the wayside. You've heard the phrase; practice makes perfect. Let me now take it a step further– practice makes permanent. Elementary students are still building foundations in their learning and require continuous practice to maintain the gains made throughout the school year. That's why the Principal's Summer Learning Challenge is a great way to avoid the dreaded summer slide.
I am creating a Principal's Summer Learning Hall of Fame bulletin board where I will highlight all the students who make an effort to complete my challenge. Just in case you can't find the details, I'm attaching them to this newsletter. Will YOU take on my challenge?
I plan to celebrate all students who complete the activities. I hope your child will be part of that celebration!
