Langston Life

May 2023

Thank you!

Dear Families, as we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you all for sharing your amazing students with us and for being such a vital part of Langston life! As we prepare for the year ahead, please take a moment to complete the Family Perception Data for Reading survey. Thank you in advance!

Teaching and Learning

Students have voted! The One School One Book (OSOB) student-selected novel will be revealed soon! This year, the OSOB committee plans to distribute the books to upcoming 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students in hopes that each student and family will participate in a kick-start to the 2023-2024 school year with fun and engaging community activities connected with the novel. A full description of summer reading and community activities will be distributed to students along with the novel before the end of the school year. The reading activities and dates will also be posted on Langston's web page. Students moving on to 9th grade will receive information from the high school on their summer reading activities/requirements.

Be on the lookout this month for a permission slip for Country Skateland. As an incentive to finish out the school year strongly, students who meet their personal growth goal on the final iReady reading and math diagnostic will be invited to attend a "Growth Goal Celebration" at Country Skateland. Attending students will receive admission and skate rental and may bring their own spending money for the snack stand.

Family Engagement

Please check "Important Dates" below for the many opportunities for families to get involved this final month of school!

The LMS Bookfair is running this week and students are able to make purchases during the school day. Families can use the LMS Bookfair link to purchase items or can visit before the Drama Club production this Thursday from 6-7pm. The Drama Club production will begin at 7pm and all are welcome to attend!

Many of you have already received an invitation to celebrate your child's academic achievement at our Candle of Knowledge Ceremony on May 22nd, beginning at 6pm. Candle of Knowledge recognizes students who have earned honor/merit roll two out of the first three quarters of the current school year and also recognizes 8th-grade students who have earned their Candle of Knowledge pin for all three years at Langston. This year, our two top-ranking 8th-grade students, Nicholas Stalnaker and Lillian McFarland, will present our awardees with a speech! We hope you will join your student at the celebration!
