If you have received an email or text about joining an honors society....
The following message was sent to all student email accounts via AVISO on 3/14/22. If you know students who have recently received a text message about joining an honors society, please refer them to this message. Thanks!
In recent days, many of our students have reported receiving text messages from an “honors society” group. It is not uncommon for students to receive emails every so often from organizations calling themselves honor societies and advertising that their members get exclusive opportunities, such as scholarships, connections to potential employers as well as a status that will be a helpful addition to a resume in exchange for purchasing a membership.
It must be noted that not all of these organizations are necessarily legitimate. Whether they actually deliver on the memberships that students purchase is what you should consider before committing to paying membership fees.
The Association of College Honor Societies evaluates the credibility of honors societies and has identified red flags for students to determine if an organization is legitimate, including the minimum academic performance required to join the organization, offering campus chapters, their organizational governance, and website criteria.
An invitation to join an honor society can be a great opportunity for a student if the society is credible. Doing additional research before paying any membership fees can be well worth it.
It should be stated that the only Honors Society officially affiliated with Randolph Community College is the Beta Theta Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Students are invited to PTK each spring and fall semester if they have completed 12 credit hours and possess a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. PTK members participate in a number of service projects both on and off campus each year with various local groups such as the NC Zoo, Boys and Girls Club, Communities In Schools and others. Students are sent an invitation to PTK via letter in an official RCC envelope and an email from our PTK advisor, Mr. Clark Adams.
For more information about RCC’s chapter of PTK, please contact Mr. Clark Adams, advisor for PTK on our campus via email at wcadams@randolph.edu or by phone at (336) 633-0238
