Like so many of you, I believe that having actively engaged parents is critical to improving student achievement. Research shows that parent involvement improves student achievement. When parents are involved, children do better in school, and that is why our parent engagement initiatives are geared towards helping us increase parent involvement in all its forms:
Learning at home
Collaborating with the Community
One area that we as a school have always been particularly proud of is the amazing fundraising support we get each year from so many of our families!
As a reminder, all money raised is used to provide student field trips, assemblies, incentives for student achievements, intramural sports and instructional materials for our school. Each year, we have been able to provide every classroom with an educational field trip, brought in character education and enrichment assemblies for our students, and provided additional instructional supplies for our classrooms!
Our phenomenal Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) spearheads our efforts each year and I am thrilled that our committed parents on our PFO Board are already considering how we can support all kids in this online model.
Be sure to become a member of this amazing group and support your child this year. Listen to our PFO President Mr. Beltran’s welcome message for families, and check out our PFO facebook page https://www.facebook.com/EdisonPFO to stay up to date on all the PFO news.
Lastly, I am excited to share that our school is implementing a Mathematics and Reading program called i-Ready this year, and starting next week, with your help, students in 2nd - 8th grade will begin their first administration. Below, you will find information about the program and how we will be using it at Edison.
As always, I look forward to hearing from you. You are always welcome to call and connect with me. Stay safe, and stay #EdisonStrong!
What is iReady?
What is i-Ready?
i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic support to keep your child engaged as they learn.
What can I do to help?
To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic next week, encourage them to:
- Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
- Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
- Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.
- Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
- Please be sure your child uses paper and pencil to show work for math questions.
We also recommend you take 5 minutes to watch this video to help prepare and motivate your child to take the Diagnostic next week! https://i-readycentral.com/videos/video-family-guidance-for-administering-the-diagnostic-at-home/?pt=teacher
Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your child’s learning! We look forward to sharing i-Ready information with you throughout the year. If you have any questions about i-Ready, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher.

School Site Council - Be the Change, Volunteer and Make a Difference
We are excited to offer parent involvement opportunities again this year! The first is to be a member of our School Site Council (SSC). The SSC makes decisions on the focus of our funding and the allocation of resources to support our school community.
This year we will have two open positions and we would love for you to think about, and nominate parents who you believe will be able to participate in the decision-making process here at Edison Academy. You only need to enter the name of the person you choose (you may nominate yourself) and indicate their affiliation with the school, i.e. parent or community member. That’s it! At this time, meetings would be held virtually, and we would return to on-site meetings when we are cleared to begin the hybrid school model. Meetings will be held Monday afternoons at 1:30 pm. via zoom. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, August 21. Get involved! Online Nomination Form: https://forms.gle/Bvwtc7gSWfRS8Ji56
