Birthday Cupcakes Procedures
Student birthdays are very special! As we celebrate these special days, let's make sure we are all speaking the same language with our campus procedures.
This excerpt comes from the Student Handbook pages 18-19:
• Parents cannot bring food or drinks to school for any student other than their own children.
EXCEPTION: The State makes an exception to this rule for birthdays. Parents may bring birthday cake/cupcakes for the class to celebrate with the birthday child.
• Health Department requires that these cakes must come from an “approved” source – a bakery or grocery store that is inspected by the Health Department.
• To ensure this safety issue, the cake must be brought in the original box in which purchased.
• To protect our students, cakes prepared in a private home cannot be brought to share with the students.
• Approved birthday cakes will be served after the celebrating class has finished lunch.
At Hearne, birthdays are celebrated at the end of the day. We allow juice boxes for students to drink in addition to the store bought cupcakes. To maintain active supervision of all students and preserve the instructional day, parents are asked to drop off the cupcakes in the front office only. There is no class party on student birthdays. Parents may prepare goodie bags for classmates, however candy cannot be included. Pencils, erasers, fruit snacks, and coloring books are all appropriate items to include. Be mindful of student allergies!
When in doubt, please speak with your supervisor.
AVID in Action Coming to Hearne this year!
Hearne has partnered with Taylor High School's AVID students to bring AVID in Action to our building this year.
Forty high school scholars will report to Hearne every Friday to serve and mentor students in their assigned classrooms. While in the classrooms, the AVID scholar's job is to provide support, encouragement, and tutoring to students in need. These students are the best and brightest in Alief.
The AVID Scholars are currently taking a True Colors personality test and selecting their grade level preferences. All PK-4 classes are eligible to participate. We will place tutors based on their grade level preference and teacher requests. They will be in your class all year!
Services students can do:
- small group tutoring
- individual tutoring
- "extra hands" during whole class instruction
- support with bulletin boards
Services students should not do:
- watch class while the teacher leaves the room
- grade papers or clerical work
- clean up classroom
Time slots for AVID tutors (they are students at Taylor HS so they will come for 30 minute service times):
9:15-9:45 am
10:10-10:40 am
11:50am-12:30pm
12:55-1:20pm

COMET- An after-school program for Hearne students needs a PAID Campus Liaison!
We have more good news, Hearne Family!
Hearne was recently selected by Mr. Chambers to serve as an after-school COMET site! Wohoo! We are so excited to lead this student initiative!
COMET, which stands for Community Outreach Missions Education Team, is an after-school program for eligible Alief ISD students.
COMET is a partnership between the Alief Independent School District and area organizations.
Calling all professional staff members: If you are interested in being the COMET Liaison for Hearne please let Mrs. Sanchez know via email by Friday, September 7th. After reviewing the responsibilities below, include in your email why you would like to be the site coordinator.
The start date for COMET is October 1st so we will select the liaison by Wednesday, September 12th.
COMET Elementary Campus Liaison Responsibilities
The COMET Elementary Campus Liaison will:
- Act as a link between the school and the COMET site
- Provide support to the COMET site
- Coordinate and host an enrichment session at the COMET site one Friday a month during the school year for COMET students
- Provide training to site leaders as needed, such training on classroom management or digital resources
- Attend parent meetings at the site if requested by site leaders
- Be available to COMET site leaders for questions, assistance, and guidance
COMET leaders will receive a stipend in the fall and spring semester from the Alief ISD Public Relations Department.
Our Vision and Mission Statement-- We are what we say we are! Make it count every day!
Hearne Elementary will provide a learning environment where all students are empowered as leaders and critical thinkers. We are committed to building positive relationships in a safe environment while creating life-long learners who are prepared for the 21st century.
Mission Statement
The mission of Hearne Elementary School is to guide our students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make responsible life choices and positive contributions in a diverse society. In collaboration with home and community, we respond to the needs of every child, ensuring that each child can and will learn.
Safety TidBit of the Week- HOLD in Your Classroom
Hold In Your Classroom
There may be situations that require students to remain in their classrooms. For example, an altercation in the hallway may demand keeping students out of the halls until it is resolved. There may be a need for students who are not in a classroom to proceed to an area where they can be supervised and remain safe.
What you will hear
The public address for Hold is: "Hold in your classroom" and is repeated twice each time the public address is performed. Be aware if there is a need to add additional directives for any students that are not in a classroom, at lunch or some other location where they should remain until the hold is lifted.
“Hold in your classroom.
Hold in your classroom.”
Actions
Students and teachers are to remain in their classroom, even if there is a scheduled class change, until the all clear is announced.
It is suggested that teachers should rapidly sweep the hallway for nearby students. Additionally, teachers should take attendance, note the time, and conduct business as usual.
