Survivor Challenge This Friday!
I hope you and your family enjoy the coming Spring Break, March 16-23. This will be a great week to rest and rejuvenate. After the time off, we will need to get back to work. We still have many standards to learn. As we come to the end of the second trimester, spring fever can tend to set in. Please continue to encourage your child to stay focused on their class work and homework. We will also be continuing to enjoy more sixth grade activities. We will try to balance the fun and work.

Daily reading practice is an extremely important daily homework assignment. Your sixth grader should be reading 30 minutes per night. Having access to books is an important part of this homework. Your child can find great books for free at the public library, and we visit the Verdugo Woodlands library on Thursdays.
Please encourage your child to read over each day of the Spring Break!
Language Arts: We will continue to work with some nonfiction texts. We are currently citing evidence to support inferences. We have completed our research for our informational essay. After the Spring Break, we will gather the research together to create our essays.
The third trimester writing focus will be persuasive essays. We will continue to practice spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
Mathematics: Unit 5 is our geometry unit that includes area, volume and surface area of three dimensional shapes.
Science: Sixth grade science is all about Earth Science. We just completed a chapter 6 test. Next we will study Earth's resources.
Social Studies: Sixth Grade history is all about ancient civilizations. Ask your child what civilization they are learning about their history class with Miss Matthewsian.
