Winter Break-No School Dec. 19- Jan. 4
First Day Of Class For Spring Semester I-Thursday, Jan. 5
Attendance Office Reminders
During the final three weeks of school before winter break, we are grateful to everyone for helping to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families.
We appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra time before and after the winter break. As long as your student is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session.
Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as to connect to their peers and teachers.
We thank:
● Our students and their families who do their best to show up daily even when it isn’t easy.
● Our teachers who go above and beyond to make school a welcoming and safe place for all students to learn.
● Our counselors, school social workers and administrators who help us work together to ensure we create a physically and emotionally safe and engaging learning environment.
● Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.
We appreciate each one of you. May these days off be restful and healing.
● If your family or your student needs support, please reach out to your Grade Level Team for assistance.

Student Equity Advisory Group
Educational Equity at Helix Charter is achieved when every student in our system has the access, opportunities, and support they need to reach their full personal and academic potential, and students are able to thrive in an inclusive school with safe, engaging classrooms.
The purpose of the Student Equity Advisory Group is to elevate the voices of students as partners in their own education and to inform our practices at Helix.
Students will participate in two half-day learning summits covering the following topics: Student Connectedness, Student Voice, Identity, Implicit Bias, and Microaggressions.
Students will also meet as a team throughout the year to provide feedback to Helix Leadership on school practices, policies and procedures that impact their experiences at Helix.
As a Student Equity Advisory Member you will be accepting a yearlong commitment. Applications are open to all students in all grade levels. Limited to 3-5 participants per grade level.
For more information, contact Grade Level Principal, Mrs. Elena Smith at esmith@helixcharter.net.

Job Opportunities
The City of San Diego is accepting applications for their Employ + Empower Internship, in which students will earn $15 per hour working for one of the City’s many departments. They have over 30 positions available in economic development, real estate assets, planning, IT, communications, engineering, parks and recreation, and more! See more information below about the program’s eligibility requirements and application process and how you can set up a recruitment event with a City staff member at your school.
Eligibility
Students need to be between the ages of 16 – 30 and currently enrolled in school or a postsecondary training program to apply. Applicants will be asked to provide proof of school enrollment, such as a photo of their school ID. The City is especially looking to hire students who meet any of the following criteria…
- Have been involved in the justice, foster care, or child welfare systems.
- Have experienced homelessness, mental health issues, or substance abuse issues.
- Are from a low income household.
Support Services
Qualifying interns may be provided transportation assistance and professional clothing. If working remotely, they will be given access to laptops and hotspots.
Application Process
- Visit internship website here: https://app.betterimpact.com/PublicEnterprise/EnterpriseSearch?EnterpriseGuid=e7ef01a2-fd5d-40e9-a8d0-78324d817ec7&SearchType=Organization&SearchId=19510.
- Create a MyImpactPage when prompted and then complete application form.
- Within 1 week of applying, students will hear back about whether they’ve been deemed eligible for the internship.
- If eligible, they will be scheduled for an interview.
Recruitment Event
Schools can schedule a recruitment event to assist students in applying to the internship. A City of San Diego representative will attend with an SDCOE staff member to conduct the presentation. The event agenda will include…
- Introduction of internship program, eligibility, and current openings at the City of SD
- Online application process and instructions
- Interview process, tips on how to prepare, and what to expect
- Next steps to completing the online application and scheduling an interview
To schedule an event, contact Ernesto Rivera at ernesto.rivera@sdcoe.net (cc’d) and provide days and times that your school is available. We will then contact the City to confirm their availability.
For more information about the Employ + Empower Internship, attend one of the City’s weekly student info sessions via Zoom on Monday’s at noon. Students must create a MyImpactPage account with the City in order to register.
