Important News from Our Nest

Special Shoutout to one of our very own SPED Teachers, Nicole Kumar, for coming up with this incredibly creative name for our newsletter!

PPT Scheduling

  • In an effort for our teachers to serve your children to the maximum extent possible, we have switched to block scheduling for PPTs. Each house has specific letter days and times that coincide with each Case Manager's schedule. While we will always accommodate families, please keep in mind this change was made to maximize service provision and minimize disruption to your child's schedule and routine.

Monitors, now, "Managers"

  • New "lingo," same role. What we used to refer to as a "Monitor" will now be referred to as a "Case Manager." In the days to come, you will receive a Welcome Letter from your child's Case Manger. Please read this carefully, as this is your "go-to" person! Get to know them, as they are your first contact for anything related to your child's IEP.

Teacher Goals

  • This year our Special Education Teachers will be focusing on goals centered around students fostering independence through self-advocacy and transition exploration. We'd encourage you to have conversations with your child around this topic. Additionally, we would also like to see more students attending PPTs! As they approach adulthood it is important we are helping students advocate for their needs and be part of the PPT process! We're excited to have your support in reaching these goals!

Parent Nights (or maybe mornings)!

PSATs

  • 9th, 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT on October 12th during the day.
  • 9th and 10th grade students are automatically signed up for the exam and 11th graders had the opportunity to sign up through September 20th, 2022. Please contact your child's counselor with questions.

CT-SEDS: Our New Hub for "All Things IEP/504!"

As I'm sure many of you may know, we have switched to a new system for IEP Documentation. The program is called CT-SEDS and will take the place of "Frontline." The entire state of Connecticut is switching to this new platform. In an effort to "go digital," you will receive important documentation from your child's PPT within the, "Parent Portal." Within the system you can sign or view documents with the click of a button! The new system is meant to make life easier for you as parents. Attached, you'll find information on how to access the "Portal" and an example of the old IEP, as compared to the new IEP.

As with any new program, there are glitches. Rest assured, we report these to the state and work to rectify any problems in a timely manner. We are grateful for your patience during this rollover.

Please note, you will receive an email prompting you to make an account when a document is sent to you.

Meet Your New Coordinator for School Counseling

Ms. Iannello has been a school counselor for the past 28 years, most recently at Portland (CT) High School since 2004, where she provided extensive academic and college advisement to students and families. Additionally, she provided special education leadership for teachers and staff as an administrator for 504 meetings and was the administrative representative in Planning and Placement Teams meetings. Ms. Iannello will be responsible for ensuring Greenwich Public Schools students enrolled in grades 6-12 receive the appropriate school counseling services, including developmental program, career counseling, personal counseling, academic counseling, and post-high school planning. In addition, she will serve as the District’s Section 504 coordinator.

Meet Your New Special Education Program Coordinator, Leah Zilich!

As the new Program Coordinator for Greenwich High School and Community Connections, I feel honored and humbled to serve the families of Greenwich. I join you from New York as an Assistant Principal of Special Services for Southern Westchester BOCES. Prior to this I served as a Special Education Teacher, General Education Teacher, Assistive Technology Specialist and Intervention Coordinator in Norwalk, Connecticut. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of you and I look forward to getting to know ALL of you and your children as we embark on a new year, together.

It is my belief that through open communication, full transparency and building a foundation of trust we can ensure that services are integrated and individualized, goals are meaningful and measurable, and students are at the forefront of all decision-making.

When I am not working, I love to ride my Peloton, take my one-eyed rescue dog on walks in the park, do pilates and craft for my staff! As a former Lacrosse coach, I am a sports enthusiast and can't wait to cheer on the Cardinals (hoping they win more games than the Jets)!

Please never hesitate to reach out to me via email at Leah_Zilich@greenwich.k12.ct.us or by phone 203-625-8018.

P.S. Thank you to ALL the staff, students and families that have welcomed me into the GHS "nest." I felt the love from Day 1!
