Our First Grade Curriculum
This week in Fundations, we're finishing Unit 2 with our test on Monday. On Tuesday, we will start Unit 3 which begins teaching digraphs such as wh, ch, sh, th, and ck. These are letters that stick together and only make one sound. Encourage your child to tap out any words they don't know when reading at home to practice these new skills.
Writing
We're continuing our study of sentence structure this week. We've mastered capitals and nouns, now we're studying verbs and punctuation. By next week, these kids will be ready to write!
Reading
We're in the final days of our Daily 5 Introduction Lessons! We've reached 17 minutes in our stamina and we're hoping to make it to 20 minutes this week. We've mastered Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Read to Someone. Next, we'll master Word Work!
The Leader In Me
We're finishing up our studying of Habit 1: Be Proactive. Now that we understand every aspect of being proactive, we're working on an art project to discuss how we can be proactive and take the first step! Look out for pictures of our work next week!
Math
After studying number sense, we're taking our knowledge and working on it during math centers! We've learned 2 centers so far: E for "Essential Review of Standards" and M for "Math Facts". This week we're going to learn how to do the ipad center and the Independent Work center! I love that we each get to practice our skills while having fun in centers.
Science/Social Studies
We're moving onto Social Studies this week by discussing communities. We're going to figure out "What is a community?" and "Who makes up our community?" First, we're going to study the Claxton community and meet some of the leaders that make our community great!
