Principal's Message

Thanks to everyone for a successful Back to School Night on Wednesday! We had an amazing turnout and in speaking with many of you throughout the evening, you very much enjoyed seeing and hearing from our dedicated, passionate, and amazing staff. Because we love what we do and know that our partnership with you is key to our kids' success, if you have any feedback on how we can make Back to School Night an even better experience, please let me know by emailing me at jen.thomas@dc.gov. Continuing on the theme of making things better, we've been working hard to update the Hearst Bloomz calendar with all known dates for upcoming school and PTA events. We're also working on updating the www.hearstes.org website with timely and relevant information that you want and need. In the coming weeks, you'll notice a variety of changes to the website, including updated information about what our kids are learning in the classroom, school and DCPS policies and procedures, and much more. If you have suggestions on things you'd like to see on the website, please email Ms. Hinchey at manik.hinchey@dc.gov. Thanks and hope you're having a great weekend!

News and Announcements from Hearst

You may have noticed at Back to School Night that we didn't talk about SEM, the Schoolwide Enrichment Model that we've been implementing for the past few years. This may come as a disappointment because our kids loved the SEM block so much. We have decided that rather than have a dedicated SEM block, as a school we are going to integrate SEM-like projects across and throughout the curriculum this year. This means more cross-curricular projects that bring together, for example, ELA, science, and library/media studies, and, in some classrooms, the introduction of maker-spaces. We view this as an evolution of the SEM program that will allow kids to connect and engage with content and projects in new and exciting ways this year. Stay tuned for Bloomz posts from our staff on this exciting development!
