GKMS 7th Grade Weekly Newsletter
Week of September 26th, 2022
Important Dates/Things to Know:
Friday 9/30 - GK PTO Fun Fair
On Friday, September 30, all 7th graders will have the opportunity to walk or read for two hours straight to raise money for a 7th grade field trip this school year. You can help support your student by pledging a flat amount or by pages read or laps walked.
Mrs. Ewald’s and Mrs. Fowler’s Reading and Language Arts
Next week we are getting into the small group learning secretion of Unit 1 ¨Generations¨. Students will be divided into small groups where they will create their group rules and norms, communicate a plan for completing tasks, and create a schedule to complete these tasks. With these small groups, they will be reading stories, answering comprehension questions, analyzing the texts, and practicing new vocabulary.
Mrs. Boyer's Reading Advancement Program
We learned lots of new information about space exploration this week. Our reading strategy was focused on main ideas and how to choose the main idea of a passage. Next week, we are going to explore some endangered species of animals and what we can do to protect them better. Our reading strategy will focus on Author’s Purpose. The students really are working so hard, and I am very proud of their progress! Ask your student about their recent Achieve 3000 scores.
MATH
We had a great end to this past week as we are finishing up with Topic 1 on Rational Numbers. Next week students will have their first CSA (Summative=80%) in math. The CSA will be on Thursday 9/29 and we will review for the summative on Wednesday. Once the CSAs are completed, we will move on to Real Numbers in Accelerated 7 while the Grade 7 students will begin working with Proportional Relationships.
**SuccessMaker Update**
Students will now complete their SuccessMaker practice at school during their CAP class. They will be working on SuccessMaker two days during the school week. The goal is still to complete at least 45 minutes. We know everyone has a busy schedule, so hopefully completing this during the school day will help. The practice during the school day will no longer effect your student's grade.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students did a great job this week writing their Chapter 2 Essay. This was our first summative grade, so make sure to check how your student did on Skyward. We started Chapter 3 at the end of the week. Students are working in groups to create a sales booth for one of the 13 colonies. We will be continuing this project next week, and starting presentations toward the end of the week.
SCIENCE
Next week will be an exciting week in Room 253. After spending a couple days learning about different types of microscopes and how to properly use one, students will finally be able to view some specimens. Microscopes will be our main focus all week as students examine both living and non-living items with their groups. It’s always a busy, but fun week for both the students and myself!
