Attention Students and Parents,
I would like to share information about some procedural changes that will be taking place by Monday, March 29.
1. Late/Missing Work Policy
It is time to allow individual staff members to reinstate late/missing work policies including deductions from assignments. With a little less than 10 weeks of instruction left in the year, it is important that students begin practicing routines and habits that will help them in the future. The key for students will be to turn work in on time. If there are extenuating circumstances, they should familiarize themselves with their individual teacher’s late policies.
2. Athletic Bags
Spring sports are here. That means each athlete could have extra equipment with them each day. We will be creating space to organize bags in the media center. Students will be dropping off bags first thing in the morning, and picking them up at the end of the day. Students should not store school supplies in these bags as they will not be accessible during the school day.
3. Lunchtime activities
Students need some type of outlet during lunch. Footballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls will be provided for the students to use during lunch. We will follow the PE policy of handwashing before and after the activity, maintaining distance during the activity, and sanitizing the equipment between each lunch. Students must maintain distance between themselves, so actual competition will not be allowed. Students may only use the equipment supplied, please do not bring extra equipment from home.
We are now one week away from Spring Break. Students, please continue to work hard in your classes. Your goal should be to have all your work completed and submitted before leaving for vacation. It is much easier to stay current than it is to catch back up after time away.

A note on masks: We rely on parent volunteers or school employees to ensure each child is ready to have their picture taken and has their mask removed if they feel comfortable. Our photographers may simply ask one time, "Would you like to take off the mask for your portrait?" Please make sure to remind your student that when it's their turn to take their picture, it is okay to remove their mask.
2021 Hopkins High School Alumni News
Because of the continued threat of the Coronavirus, the HHS Alumni officers have once again decided to postpone the annual HHS Alumni potluck luncheon. It was scheduled for noon on June 19, 2021, but it will be postponed until June 18, 2022. At that time we will be honoring three classes, the class of 1970, 1971, and 1972 for reaching 50 years since their graduations from Hopkins High School.
Since 2003, the HHS Alumni Association has awarded 33 scholarships and will be presenting two more scholarships to seniors from the class of 2021. If you or any other alumni would like to contribute to the scholarship fund please mail a check to Bob Hennip, Treasurer at 3664 18th Street, Wayland, MI 49348. If you wish to honor a classmate please include that information with your donation.

Electronic Devices
Cell phones are to be turned off and in backpacks during the school day. Cell phones that are used during the school day will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent.
If a student needs to contact a parent/guardian, they can go to the office to either use their cell phone or call from the office phone. If a parent needs to reach a student, they can leave a message for their student with the office.
Dress Code
1. Dress should be neat, clean, comfortable, and in good taste. Shoes will be worn at all times.
2. The wearing of hats and head coverings are prohibited in school. Exceptions may include Spirit Days keeping within the guidelines of that specific Spirit Day.
3. If poor personal hygiene becomes disruptive to the educational environment, parents will be contacted, and appropriate steps to resolve the issue will be taken.
4. Non-prescription sunglasses will not be worn in the school building.
5. Shirts need to be appropriate: Tops that expose the midriff, cleavage, back, or bare sides (such as muscle shirts, tank tops, or cut-off t-shirts) are considered inappropriate. Sleeveless shirts must be a minimum of a hand’s width wide on the shoulder. Strapless tops are not allowed.
6. Skirt/Skort/Shorts length must come to a minimum of the student’s fingertips when arms are naturally at the side.
7. Clothing must not be too tight, too short, too sheer, or too revealing whether standing or seated, this includes tights and leggings, that may be deemed inappropriate by an administrator. If you choose to wear these items where the outline of private body parts are noticeable, a long top must cover all a student’s privy parts fully.
8. Clothing that allows undergarments to be seen are not allowed. This includes pants with holes and “sagging” pants.
9. Any article of clothing that graphically depicts anything in poor taste (i.e. tobacco/alcohol products or advertisements, profanity, etc.) will not be allowed.
10. Coats and backpacks shall remain with the student until lockers are assigned.
NOTE: Interpretation of the Dress Code is left to the discretion of school staff members. Any form of extreme or conspicuous dress that disrupts the educational process will be subject to corrective action and/or disciplinary action see page 10 for consequences. Students in violation of the dress code will not be permitted to attend regular classes until properly dressed.
NEW 2020-21: All students are required to wear masks properly over the nose and mouth. The mask will be subject to the same rules as other attire. Any masks deemed disruptive or distracting may result in a dress code violation.

ATTENDANCE
Please call the Middle School office at (269) 793-7407 within 24 hours of your students' absence. You may leave a message on our voicemail system day or night. When reporting illness, please inform the secretary of the type of symptoms your child is experiencing (fever, sore throat, ect.). If your child is absent 2 days or more, you may request homework. If your student is absent only 1 day, homework may be picked up from their teachers the following day. You may also email absences to jennhitc@hpsvikings.org.

IMMUNIZATIONS
Please report all immunizations that your child has had so we are able to keep our school records up to date. All new students and all 6th graders must be completely up to date on all immunizations. Contact the HMS office if you have any questions.
MEDICATION
ALL medications needing to be dispensed to students must be supplied from home. The school does not provide any type of medication. All prescription medication must be provided in a pharmacy labeled bottle. Tylenol/Aspirin must be brought to the office in an unopened bottle. All students requiring any type of medication must have a medication form completed by their parents and on file in the office.
CHANGES in Phone Numbers, Home Address & E-Mail
Please inform the office any time there are changes in your address or phone numbers. We need to have this information so we can update our records and successfully contact you if needed.
