Grade One Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents,

Over the next 7 weeks we will be following a new unit of work called “Our World’- the environment. We will begin our learning journey with a fun and enthusiastic Treasure Hunt Entry Point next week! Look out for photos in our Grade 1 Newsletter.

Our KEY LEARNING GOALS (skills) during this unit are:

Be able to express views on the attractive and unattractive features of an environment

Be able to communicate their geographical knowledge and understanding in a variety of ways

Be able, with help, to gather information

Be able to offer explanations for what happened and why it happened

Be able to express opinions about the attractiveness of a particular environment (like/dislike)

Our key LEARNING TARGETS (Knowledge) during the unit are:

  • learning about what the word ‘environment’ means

  • learning that scientific enquiry involves asking questions, collecting evidence through observation and measuring

  • learning about the basic conditions needed for living things to survive

  • learning that people can harm or improve the environment

  • learning about the main physical and human features of their local environment

During this unit we will be focusing on Art, Science, PE, Geography, Chinese, Technology, Music and International.

Our Personal Goals will be RESPECT and THOUGHTFULNESS.

In Art we will explore the use of natural materials while creating sculptural pieces for our sensory garden here. Children will become knowledgeable about the elements of texture, form and pattern when creating sculpture. To help with this project, we will develop skills in drawing and 3-D Sculpture.

In Science, we’ll be finding out:

• About the animals, plants and birds in our local environment

• About the best soil conditions to grow seeds

• How we can recycle and reuse materials to help our environment

In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

• About different wildlife habitats in our local environment

• About the animals and insects that share our local environment

• How our local environment compares with other locations around the world

In Technology we will be:

  • using simple tools to create little gardens

    In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • how to make a fact file about our home country to share with others

  • the names and approximate locations of the home countries of children within our class and school

    In Language Arts we will be:

    • Continuing Writers Workshop and an Author Study on Julia Donaldson and Kevin Henkes

    • Non-fiction writing and looking at features of non-fiction texts

    • Grammar focus on verbs (conjugating verbs, past tense verbs doubling rule, future verbs)

    • Introducing and reviewing CAFE reading strategies

    • Spelling both high frequency words, topic words and weekly phonics

    blends (vowel teams)

    • Applying their word work to their independent writing

    • Handwriting: beginning to learn joins

    In Mathematics we will be:

  • Thinking about numbers to 40
  • Working on addition and subtraction with and without renaming
  • Looking at Time

In Chinese, we will be working on Unit 4 : My Stationery

• Learn to say different kinds of stationery

• Learn about the Chinese calligraphy set

• Learn handwriting strokes

We will also be working on Unit 5: The Chinese Calendar

• Learn the animals of the Chinese zodiac

• Related nursery rhymes

• Related craft work

In Music, we will begin a unit titled “Ostinato”. This term pupils will be discovering the meaning of a musical ostinato. They will be able to:

•Sing in an ensemble

•Play a variety of percussion instruments

•demonstrate repeated musical patterns

•Be able to compose their own short musical ostinato

In ICT we will be beginning a unit titled ‘Working with Images. We will be using digital cameras to capture photographs of our world.

Children will become knowledgeable about:

  • The functions of a digital camera
  • What makes a good photograph

To help us with this project, we will develop the technical skills of:

  • Using a digital camera
  • Framing a photograph
  • Taking a variety of good photographs

In PE:

The children will be:

  • developing their agility, balance and coordination using a range of equipment and in a range of activities
  • given emphasis on rules and officiating and leadership and communication skills

Communication and cooperation will be the focus of all lessons!

In Swimming the children will learn:

  • to take part in competitive swimming races including correct starts and finishes

  • to spend time at ease in the water
  • to understand the principles of safe activity in the water
  • to develop arm and leg action and breathing in Breaststroke and Backstroke

  • to understand that exercise has an effect on their body

We already know the interest you take in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work they have done as the term progresses and let them teach you! If your child has some work to research, please help them, but without actually doing it. If you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme please take it, but your enthusiasm and interest is most important.

By the end of the unit, we hope your child has achieved all of the learning targets. We hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom. If you have any comments about the work your child has done, please get in touch.
