Putting a Mission into Motion
Why is trust important in our new learning environment?
Change is not easy to handle. Change requires that we do things that we have never done before and operate in uncertainty as we move to a new process or environment. Our brain is wired to avoid unsafe situations. So, we tend to push away from change because change can seem risky.
As we continue to move forward in remote learning, this idea is vital to keep in mind. While we feel stress, unsure of our capabilities, anxious, and even a little afraid, we must remember that our students feel the same. To help students push past these feels, we must make them feel safe.
We feel safe in trusted environments and unsafe in untrusted environments. The key is trust. As stated last week, you cannot push past trust. Forming trust in an environment that we may not fully trust ourselves is challenging, but it is probably the most critical work we are doing right now. Trust is built the same way as it is built in any environment; through relationships, connection, and support.
No matter what format you have set up for remote learning or how you are sending academic work to students, do not forget about focusing on the kid and a person first and a student second. This is how we serve our diverse community in a time of need.
More to come next week -- keep working to put our mission into motion! #FlyAsOne
