Peek at the Week

Classroom Happenings
Grades five through eight participated in a Sandy Hook initiative called Start With Hello Week. During the week of September 24–28th, 2018, hundreds of schools and youth organizations across the United States participated in Start With Hello Week to teach students, grades 2–12, the skills they need to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness, and encourage them to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation. Each day of the week, Sterling Middle School students participated in different activities to promote and encourage a sense of belonging to students on their team and throughout the building in younger grades. One of the activities that our middle school students participated in was wearing a name tag to reinforce the importance of how simply saying hello to someone in the hallway, or starting a conversation with someone sitting alone can make a positive impact on others. Students also worked in cooperative groups to create visual representations empowering students to not only be kind to one another, but to also empathize and support peers. In addition, students created a mural filled with bright colored positive post-it notes encouraging students to not give up and to feel included, not isolated. At the end of the week, some students chose to present something that they worked on throughout Start with Hello week with their peers at our monthly Community Meeting.

News from Mrs. Smith
It's hard to believe that winter is right around the corner! I am compiling winter boot size information for our 2018 Winter Boot Project. If your family is in need, we are partnering with the TVCCA's Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to provide winter boots during the upcoming holiday season. The deadline to provide Winter boot information for PK through 5th grade students is October 10, 2018. Please provide the student's name, age, gender, and boot size (no 1/2 sizes). Please email or call Mrs. Smith with the boot information, or if you have any questions.
