Highland Elementary Parent News

Week of October 18, 2021

Hello Highland Parents!

Wow! October began and it has been a very busy month indeed!

This Wednesday is Unity Day. On this day, we all wear orange to show our commitment to building a school that is bully-free, inclusive, and kind. We hope that your child will join us in wearing orange and saying "No bullies at Highland!"

Next week is Red Ribbon Week. Each day we will be asking our students and staff to show their school spirit (see schedule below). On Friday, October 29, we will have a minimum day for all students (including HEARTS). This means that ALL students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. Please make arrangements for your child on this day as teachers will be completing Report Cards and preparing for Parent-Teacher Conferences. In addition, on Friday, October 29, we will have our annual Halloween costume parade (students and staff only this year) and class parties. We are asking parents to donate the following (if possible):

  • Unopened bags of wrapped candy
  • Small individual "party" gifts for children (no guns or violence please)
  • School supplies (pencils, erasers, individual pencil sharpeners)

PLEASE NOTE: If you will be donating, please send with your child or drop off before Wednesday, October 27. This gives us time to quarantine the items before they go to classrooms.

On Friday, October 15, we had our second I-ROCK recess. This time, we had a DJ who played music and your children danced and showed us their best dance moves. We had over 600 students at this recess; an increase of 200 students over our September I-ROCK recess. We are so proud of our students who are improving their attendance and meeting school behavior expectations. For our next I-ROCK recess, we are setting a goal of 100% attendance. To accomplish this, we will be sending a letter to parents to assist us in creating a behavior or attendance plan for your child. We hope that by working together, we can meet our goal for our next I ROCK recess scheduled for Friday, November 12, 2021.
