Eastwood Academy HS Newsletter - October 2021

Greetings, Families!

Thank you all for a successful first six weeks of school! We've already had a very eventful school year so far. Here are the topics you'll find in this month's bulletin:

  • September Students of the Month
  • PSAT/SAT
  • Project Saving Smiles
  • Spirit Week Themes
  • Fall Festival
  • Attendance Reminders

September Students of the Month

Every month our teacher grade level groups meet to decide on one student within their grade level that has exhibited the Eastwood Core Values:

  • Practice perseverance
  • Exhibit integrity
  • Take care of yourself and others

Please note that none of the Core Values speak to our academic expectations with regard to grades earned in classes. We strongly believe that our students should also be recognized for their soft skills and positive character traits. Students who are named each month are eligible for the Student of the Year award in their grade level. Student of the Year is selected by the administrators on campus.

Congratulations to the September 2021 Students of the Month below!

PSAT and School Day SAT

On Wednesday, October 13 students in all grade levels will take either the PSAT or School Day SAT exams here on campus. Please ensure your child has a healthy breakfast and arrives to campus before 8:25 a.m. A rushed student is a panicked test-taker and we want to be sure all of our students do their very best on these exams. If college is the goal, PSAT and SAT are the tools our students need in their toolbox for entry!

9th Graders: PSAT 8/9

10th Graders: PSAT 10

11th Graders: PSAT National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test

12th Graders: College Session OR School Day SAT

Project Saving Smiles

Free Dental Care!

Nurse Campos and Ms. Demetriou have partnered with Project Saving Smiles to provide free dental services to our students here at Eastwood Academy. We know dental care can get expensive, so we hope that our families without insurance will take advantage of this opportunity. The services are also available to families with insurance!

Students must sign up and submit their consent forms to Nurse Campos or Ms. Demetriou no later than November 29, 2021. No forms for sign ups will be accepted after the deadline. Students can scan the QR code on the flyer or click the link button below to sign up.

Eastwood Spirit Week

Every school year, our Eastwood Hype Club coordinates a campus-wide spirit week during the last week of October. Whether your family acknowledges/celebrates Halloween or not, these activities are designed to promote a positive environment of positivity and friendly cheer rather than the celebration of any particular holiday. We encourage all of our students and staff to participate but it is by no means required.

Should you wish to participate, the following flyers below outline the dress themes for each school day during the week of October 25.

Annual Fall Festival

Eastwood's Annual Fall Festival is scheduled for Friday, October 29 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. While we are allowing outside vendors and small businesses to host a booth/table at our festival, this event is only available to currently enrolled students, parents, and staff of Eastwood Academy. In other words, you don't have a to be a student, parent, or staff member to sell items at our Festival but you do have to be a student, parent, or staff to visit the Festival.

Table/booth sign up deadline is October 27 at 4:30 p.m.

Attendance Reminders

Now that we're back in-person for instruction and all end of course exams, including AP exams, will take place this school year attendance is vital. Every school day or class period your child misses sets them behind significantly with content material and creates more stress/anxiety for the student in trying to catch up.

We understand, however, when emergencies arise or students fall sick. If your child must miss school due to illness or a family emergency, it is required that the student reach out to their teachers for any missed instructional materials and assignments so that they student does not fall too far behind. Additionally, upon return from the absence, the student is required to:

  1. Submit a doctor's excuse note or written parent note*. Turn in to pink try outside the attendance office or email to: jermeka.pierott@houstonisd.org.
  2. Communicate with all of their teachers to get specific due dates for missed assignments.

*Please note that written parent notes are not automatically approved to excuse an absence. Events such as family vacations, hair appointments, helping a parent with a home project, etc. are not justifiable reasons for missing instruction.
