Sad, Sad News
It is with a broken heart that I tell you that the most inspirational soul in my life, my mother, has passed away. I will be on bereavement leave Monday through Thursday. Your children have been so, so good to me. Many people wondered how I was able to be at work the morning she passed. It's because I needed your children more than they needed me on that particular day. You simply cannot believe the words of sympathy that came out of the mouths of these children. Parents, we are doing something right.
Basket Bash
I want to thank those of you who've sent money in for the upcoming Basket Bash. We are so grateful for your support. There is still time to send money in for this fundraising event, as money is not due until March 20.
NWEA/MAPS Testing
We have wrapped up our end-of-the-year NWEA/MAPS Testing. Overall, I am extremely proud of these mathematicians. Remember, in second grade students are tested in the area of math for NWEA/MAPS. Reading tests are taken through an Oral Reading Fluency Benchmark Program of the same name. Once the NWEA/MAPS reports are available, I'll be certain to send your child's to you.
Iditarod! The Race is On!!!
As of Saturday, the mushers and their canine teams have embarked across the vast Alaskan wilderness for that 1,049-mile trek. Students will be following their individual musher via the GPS tracking system on the Iditarod official website. The data collection that these kiddos will be doing each day will blow your mind! They will be comparing temperatures, tracking miles ran and miles to go, and will be creating daily leader boards. The will be practicing reading a map and becoming proficient with both cardinal and intermediate directions. To say that these kiddos are engaged in the learning is an understatement! I will cheerfully share my login and password with you and your child so that you, too, can check in during after school hours. Simply login to www.iditarod.com/gps/

Next Week's Share Topic
Creature Feature Along the Iditarod Trail: An Alaska Animal Research Project While running the Iditarod race, mushers are up close and personal with all things nature. This means that they may have friendly—or not-so-friendly—encounters with animals along the trail. Students have chosen one of the creatures that reside in Alaska to research. The research is complete and they will be sharing their findings with the class, so no at-home preparation is necessary.
