Dear Deer Hill Families,
The noblest art is of making others happy. – PT Barnum
Deer Hill students were filled with happiness this week as we welcomed New Jersey Circus Center for our circus in residence. Students have stretched their skills in a variety of circus acts such as juggling, stilts, diablos, devil sticks, spinning plates, and aerial silks. Most importantly, they have fostered important character traits such as teamwork, perseverance, courage, and creativity. Tonight is the culmination of their efforts with the 5th grade circus performance. Here are some important details:
- Families that purchased circus t-shirts may pick them up beginning at 6:00 pm. Please bring a copy of your invoice (electronic is fine).
- Advance sale ticket pickup and at-the-door ticket sales begin at 6:15. Entrance to the school will be limited to the front entrance and cafeteria doors.
- 5th grade performers should arrive no later than 6:30.
- Doors to the gym will open at 6:30 for seating.
- Additional merchandise will be available for purchase outside the doors to the gym.
- If you purchased a t-shirt and will not be attending tonight's circus, your t-shirt will be distributed on Monday.
We hope you'll join us this evening for the unique magice that the circus brings when it comes to town!
All the best,
Alex Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published in three weeks on Friday, December 13th.
Deer Hill Winter Concert
From Mr. DeWaal and Mrs. Lewis, our Band and Chorus teachers: The annual Deer Hill School Holiday Concert will take place on Wednesday, December 11, beginning at 7PM. 5th grade Band students and students in all grades who participate in Chorus will perform. We encourage students to wear something festive. As this is a formal performance, when possible, please avoid sending your student in jeans, t-shirts, sweatpants/yoga pants, or sneakers. However, there is no expectation that you need to go out and purchase anything to wear.
On the evening of the concert, Band students should be in the Deer Hill School gymnasium by 6PM. to set up and briefly rehearse. Chorus students should plan to arrive by 6:30. Doors will open for the audience promptly at 6:45PM.
Tails Wag During Reading Rovers
Reading Rovers continues to be a highlight of our Tuesday mornings at Deer Hill. We are so grateful for our partnership with Cohasset Working Dog Foundation. There are no better reading buddies than our furry friends, Taco, Parker, Gracie, and Layla!
Project 351 Food Drive
Laura Saiz and Devin Tulio, students at the Cohasset High School, are doing a Fundraiser under Project 351 to benefit the Cohasset Food Pantry. You can help them by sending your kids to school with non-perishable items or dropping them at the school. The fundraiser will be running from December 2nd to December 13th. We will provide a collection box for all items. Thank you! Lauren and Devin
Choose Kindness
A highlight of each morning is the time I spend presenting morning announcements with 5th grade students. They come prepared with an interesting fact, inspirational message, or sometimes a joke. I often chime in with my own thoughts and always conclude with the phrase, “Choose kindness” as it is at the heart of our Deer Hill culture. This week we dove a little deeper into what that notion of kindness really means, sharing three kindness myths throughout the week as outlined in a blog by David Guerin. Something to discuss around your family’s dinner table: “What does kindness truly mean and how is it actively demonstrated?” It’s a topic we will continue to explore here as well!
School Council at Deer Hill
Are you familiar with the role of School Council at Deer Hill? Our School Council is comprised of three parent members, two teachers, myself, and a School Committee liaison. In addition to being a think tank for initiatives at our school, the School Council is charged with providing input on the School Handbook, School Improvement Plan, and annual budget. Deer Hill School Council meetings are typically scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month at 3pm. Agendas are posted at Town Hall at least 48 hours prior. These are open meetings; all are welcome.
Blast into 2020 with the Read A Thon!
January will be here before you know it, and this year our Read A Thon is coming early to boost the winter doldrums! The theme is Blast into 2020: Reading through the Decades (I feel some spirit days coming our way!). The Read A Thon will begin with our kickoff assembly on Friday, January 10th and will run from 1/10/19-1/31/19. The closing ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, February 5th. Look for more details in the coming weeks. Happy reading!
Thinking Ahead - Accessing Progress Reports
Term 1 for elementary schools ends on 11.27.19, and progress reports will be posted to Aspen on 12.9.19. Hard copies of progress reports will no longer be sent home. In anticipation of this, all families were earlier asked to create an account through the Aspen Student Portal. If you have yet to do so, please access Aspen Student Portal Login Info and Logging Into Aspen for the 1st Time to help you complete this process.
