September 2022 - Week 4

Ms. Linda's Letter

Dear Preschool Families,

Thank you for a fantastic first month of preschool. The car line is running smoothly and the children are doing well learning and following classroom routines. At Unity Preschool, one of the first items that we focus on is developing self-help skills. Self-help skills are abilities that children gradually attain to give them more independence. All of the children have mastered our first self-help skill: walking to their classroom without tears! Additional self-help skills that we are working on include hanging their backpacks, taking out their folders, taking care of their trash after snack, attending to bathroom needs, and picking up toys. When we trust children to do things for themselves, they feel empowered. Their involvement contributes to growing their learning experiences. It is also about learning life skills so they can look after themselves without depending on others. It has been a joy and a delight watching your children learn to master these skills and we look forward to continuing the process throughout the school year.

Color Day - Go BLUE!

Enjoy our BLUE DAY pictures below.

Our next color day is October 13 - Orange Day!

Spirit Day - DOT Day

We will continue to host fun internal events in our classrooms on the last Thursday of each month. Our first "Spirit Day" is next Thursday, September 29. We will read "The Dot" by one of our favorite authors, Peter Reynolds, and enjoy some fun activities. Please wear something with polka dots to preschool.

Future Spirit Days:

October 27: Halloween Celebration - We will have Halloween parties in our classrooms.

November 22: Feast Day - We will celebrate Thanksgiving in our classrooms by enjoying a Thanksgiving meal prepared by some special Unity Preschool friends.

December 15: PJ Day - We will all wear our pj's and enjoy some Christmas fun.

Family Picnic - October 5 and 6

While the weather is still nice, we thought it would be fun to host a Family Picnic for our preschool classes. You (mom, dad, grandparents, friends, siblings) are invited to bring a picnic lunch and a blanket to preschool and we will enjoy lunch together in our Park. Our Threes classes are invited to join us on Wednesday, October 5 at 11:00 and our Twos and Fours classes are invited to join us on Thursday, October 6 at 11:00. If you are a working parent and cannot attend, simply let us know. You can send a lunch with your child and we will arrange a picnic partner for your child. If the weather does not cooperate, we will postpone until the following week.

Chapel Returns

Today we enjoyed our first Chapel lesson with our Threes and Fours classes in our Sanctuary. This year we will be meeting once a month and sharing stories with the children that tells them of God's love for them. Ms. Margaret, Unity's Director of Music, will be helping us with music each Chapel. Various members of our Church Staff will also be joining us. Ms. Kathryn, Unity's Director of Christian Education, helped us today and shared the story of creation with the children. Ask your child what is your favorite thing that God created?

Scholastic Book Order

We sent home scholastic flyers with your children earlier this week. Books will be shipped to the preschool and sent home with your child. With a $25 order, you can pick a FREE $5 Book (use code: READS). Your orders help us purchase more books for our Preschool Library as well as Birthday, Christmas, Special Theme, and End-of-Year books for your children. We also included a Preschool Wish List with some books that we would appreciate for our preschool library.

We will be finalizing our order on Monday, September 26 so that we receive maximum awards for September. We included a link below for the digital flyers for preschool students. Ms. Maureen Nolin is beginning her 4th year at Unity Preschool. She currently is our Lead Teacher in our Fours (Fish) class. This is her third year working with our Fours classes. She was previously our Lead Teacher in our Threes class. Ms. Maureen is a former Kindergarten teacher when she lived in New York.

Ms. Maureen and her husband, Tim, have three daughters: Ellie (a student at Fort Mill High School), Bailey (a student at Pleasant Knoll Middle School), and Colleen (a student at Orchard Park Elementary School). Ms. Maureen and her family are members of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill.

Ms. Kellie Ellis is beginning her 6th year at Unity Preschool. She currently assists Ms. Maureen in our Four's (Fish) class. This is her fourth year working with our Fours classes. She worked three years in the Threes classes and was a Twos Assistant at her previous preschool. Ms. Kellie and her husband, Jeff, have two children: Ainsley (a Sophomore at Clemson) and Ryan (a Senior at Nation Ford), and a beloved dog, Savvy. Ms. Kellie serves on our Preschool Advisory Board and helps us with singing during our Chapel lessons. We are so grateful for Ms. Kellie and the abundant joy that she shares with us often, especially when she dances in our hallways.

Here are a few of Ms. Kellie's favorites:

Favorite Music: all music but country. Ms. Kellie loves going to concerts, especially with her daughter. She recently attended the Maroon Five concert at the PNC Music Theater.

*Label Clothes, Bookbags and Water Bottles: Please remember to label any item that you send to school with your child so that we can make sure they go home with the correct child.
