Graham Park Middle Scheduling
A Parent's guide to courses and scheduling for 2019-2020
Welcome to the Park's 2019-2020 School Year
Hello Graham Park Families,
This newsletter will contain a lot of information regarding classes, schedules, and everything new that is happening in our building regarding schedules. By now, you should have received your student's course requests via email. I am still amending some information. For example, you may see quarter classes assigned to some encores. This will be changed in the background, as I work over the summer.
Parents, please keep in mind that the course requests simply means that your student has choices regarding some of their classes. HOWEVER, final placement into some courses will depend on space availability and passing SOL scores. We do our best to place your student with their first choices.
This newsletter will be split up by grade so that you can get a detailed picture of the classes being offered at each grade level.
Let's talk some of the basics for next year:
· School begins at 8:05 am.
· All students will have 7 classes each day.
· 6th and 7th grade will be on a 2-day Encore rotation (Blue day, White day) throughout the week. 8th grade will have their encore classes everyday, during their 6th and 7th block.
· Classes will run approximately 55 minutes.
· All students will have a homeroom that will be attached to their first core class (3rd block for 6th graders).
· There will be 2 encores everyday that the students will see.
· Music and PE will run for a full year. If your student commits to a music program, the expectation is that they stay in that class for the year.
· All 6th and 7th graders will have four related art courses during the year.
Remediation classes: A remediation class may be implemented into a student's ENCORE schedule. Students who receive a failing score between 375-399 in either the Math or Reading SOL will be automatically enrolled in a remediation class for one semester.
· Lunches will begin at 10:30 am. All grades will be split into two lunch periods.
· School will end at 2:55.
Signet: Students who received gifted services (SIGNET) last year will continue to receive services at Graham Park Middle School. SIGNET is not on student schedules because services are provided as a pull-out program. Students will attend SIGNET once a week for up to 90 minutes during their encore class times. They will be pulled-out of encore. Students will not be pulled out of core classes; Math, Science, Language Arts, or Social Studies.
Finally, towards the bottom of the newsletter, you will see additional documents with Encore course descriptions and another sample of how to read the encore schedules.
SUMMER TIME: WHEN WILL SCHEDULES BE SENT HOME??: AUGUST 2019
During the week of August 19th, Prince William Central Office will send out your student's schedule via email.
** It is VERY IMPORTANT that you have an updated email address on file. **
