Destigmatizing the Name 'Proviso'
On behalf of the Superintendent’s Student Roundtable
Written by Schandy Cordero, PMSA junior, and Kevin Jones, PMSA senior
Residents of the Proviso District are among the most hardworking, essential and honest people.
Living in a low-income district is not easy, but there is a sense of resilient hope among its citizens. Many students have immigrant parents who seek better resources and education for their children. Other students have parents who, against all odds, defeated the crushing weight of historical economic and social oppression to become college graduates and professionals. There are also students whose parents may not have received a post-secondary education, but who work long and hard every day to support their children and foster in them powerful confidence so that one day they might achieve the feats that their parents once dreamed of: an influential community filled with beautiful cultural diversity in which everyone makes an integral contribution; a powerful community where everyone knows how much effort it takes to make a difference to effect progress together. The power that is invested in the Proviso Township is owed to the bold and daring individuals who reside within it.
Despite the great history and effort that is possessed by our district, many have given up on the name Proviso. A name that once held so much excitement and potential is now one that breeds resentment and contempt. This is especially felt in the hearts of us students, but we, as the Superintendent’s advisory group, strive to change that.
On September 21, 2022, a fresh group of the Superintendent’s Student Roundtable members met on the fifth floor of PMSA for the first time in the 2022-2023 academic year. Present members include Kamila Casas and Dulce Estrada Flores (Proviso East); Kenneth Hernandez (Proviso West); Schandy Cordero, Jarrell David, Deanna Delcarmen, Kevin Jones, Keith Torres, Andy Tran, and Henry Tran (PMSA). After quick introductions and greetings, our group urgently tackled the critical issues in our district, seeking to understand how they affect our fellow students.
The Superintendent's Student Roundtable's role is to advise Dr. Henderson on the changes we'd like to see and to facilitate those changes. Working in collaboration, we want to improve student safety, environmental conditions, and school enthusiasm. We believe we can make a difference. All students of District 209 have the responsibility of striving for the improvement of conditions within our schools to universally optimize the quality of our education. However, as students selected to collectively aid the district and Superintendent, it is our duty to guide these initiatives, advocate for students, and help students express themselves and their concerns in an effective manner.
The name Proviso does not have to be stigmatized. No institution is perfect. However, complacency is never an option. We want to help the district move forward and we aim to leave it a better place for generations to come. If you are a Proviso resident, parent, teacher, or student, we ask that you not give up hope. Our district holds too much potential to be dismissed before we put in the effort to improve it. Maintaining an open mind is encouraged as our district is built on diversity; the complexity of our opinions is what helps us stay honest and fair. Though Proviso Township High Schools may have faced many challenges in recent years, a bright future can be realized through collaboration among District 209's communities.
Thank you for reading! If you would like to be involved with our path toward change, do not hesitate to contact the members of the Superintendent’s Roundtable with your concerns or inquiries about conditions at any of the three District 209 campuses.

Los miembros incluyen a Kamila Casas y Dulce Estrada Flores (Proviso East); Kenneth Hernandez (Proviso West); Schandy Cordero, Jarrell David, Deanna DelCarmen, Kevin Jones, Keith Torres, Andy Tran y Henry Tran (PMSA).
