Monday: Mysterious Movers

This book is different. It's a Haiku which is a form of Japanese poetry. The art is watercolors and reflects Japanese culture.

Introduce author and take a picture walk and discuss vocabulary.

Mysterious is something that happens unexpectedly or without explanation (flowers growing in places they weren't planted, bottles washing ashore miles from where they likely would be found).

On page 7 have children share what would happen if the seed landed on fertile soil.

On page 14 &15, have children notice how the wind is portrayed differently (sway). What was mysteriously moved on this page?

Tuesday: River Talk Listening Story pg. 211

Discuss rivers. They are flowing bodies of water that run downhill unless the land is flat. Most rivers flow into larger bodies of water like oceans, seas or lakes. The end of a river is called the mouth.

Read the listening story. Ask children to listen for the reason rivers are disgruntled. Why didn't rivers want to join the ocean? What things might have floated in the ocean from the river? Can the ocean become polluted from the things from the river?

Wednesday: Henny Penny Story

This is a story about a silly hen that jumps to a very interesting conclusion when she is hit in the head by an acorn.

What hit Henny Penny on the head? What made the acorn fall? How would the story be different if Henny Penny tripped and hit her head?

Thursday: Twinkly Little Star

Read the story.

Why did the stars bow when the sun began to rise? When do performers bow? Where do the stars go during the day?

Friday: Ms. Bumblebee Gathers Nectar

This is a story about a mysterious mover, the bumblebee. The bumblebee gathers nectar from flowers for making honey and in the process picks up pollen on her legs. The pollen from one flower travels with her to another flower, and this transfer creates new flowers. Pollen is so small you can barely see it on the bees legs, so this is why we call the bee a mysterious mover.

Watch the story.

Ask your child how many flowers Ms. Bumblebee visited?

Point out that bee is a short form of the word bumblebee.
